Humping help!

First time cat servant hoping for some expert advice here. Our gorgeous neutered boy is now 12 months old and is an absolute delight - affectionate, playful, good tempered, friendly, using cat flap beautifully etc. We all love him to pieces.

We got him from a rescue as a 9 week old and he has always loved kneading and chewing soft blankets. Whilst this has always been cute, his back legs have started to become involved in the kneading and then he starts humping the blanket. It doesn't overly bother me - he's only doing it on his blankets although these are on our beds, but waking up in the night to the bed tremors from his humping is a little disconcerting Confused My teenage daughter is more bothered by it and one of his favourite places seems to be the blanket on her bed. He previously used to just snuggle down and sleep which she loved but now humps before he snuggles down and often wakes her in the night with it too.

What can we do? Should we do anything?

Little humperGrin Beautiful boy.

I had a cat who often did this. The vet told me that it happens with some neutered males, and that it's just their instinct, possibly learned behaviour if they weren't neutered til older. There's nothing to be done about it. I just used to shoo him away and he'd holler at me for being interrupted😾

My little humper❤

Aww what a gorgeous boy ❤️ "little humper" 😂

We are trying with the shooing and picking him up off blankets but it feels so mean when he's having such a lovely time purring away and he gets very grumpy about being disturbed (I mean you would do wouldn't you?!) and goes sulking off outside. Who knew the little furry overlords would be just as complicated as human children 😂

One of mine does this but on me rather than on a blanket! It’s grim but he does go away before anything ‘happens’.

My tom (neutered but we don't know how late - had him from 3 years old) does this! Mostly with DS1's soft toys - the bastard shows a clear preference for soft toy wolves and foxes. Grin He also does it with blankets - but only handknitted ones or anything fluffy like a deep pile fleece. We shout at him to get off the handknits but I'm afraid I'm now past caring about the other stuff!

Vet suggested the soft toy shagging might be because he was being bullied by a local cat, and we got a Feliway plug in - made no difference. He just goes through letchy phases!

Thank you for this - I kind of feel happy he's choosing his own blankets to get jiggy with 😂 rather than any of the other things you've mentioned!

I do wonder about the idea it could be related to being bullied. We have a lot of state-offs with a mean cat in the garden...

I run a boarding cattery and this is fairly normal behaviour!!👍
