Peeing on carpet

Hi.
Our female cat is 5yrs; was fully trained to go outside however this past 6 months she has been peeing / pooing on my carpet when our front door is - every single day / night.

I've put the litter tray back for her & she is more than able to go outside as she has a cat flap - however she doesn't go!

The smell is disgusting and I can't seem to get rid of it. She has ruined our new carpet that has only been down 9 months; I'm now going to have to replace before the landlord sees.
I've tried to cover the carpet but she scratches until she moves the cover.
I've had the carpet up to clean / try to reduce the smell. I've cleaned the carpet with the carpet cleaner.

I'm at the end of ideas and am truly at breaking point.
I have a young toddler who also crawls into her mess if she's got there before me in the mornings.

Does anyone have any ideas?

So sorry to hear you are struggling with this as I know how stressful it can be. We have had this before but never really resolved why.

I don't really have any definitive advice but didn't want to read and run. Has anything else changed in the house at all - a new cat on the block for example that makes her scared to go out? Any chance it could be health related - maybe need a trip to the vets to rule that out? Definitely invest in the enzyme cleaner if you haven't already.

Is there any way you can keep her out of that area completely to remove the association?

Has the vet checked her for a UTI?

Pooing there can be a sign that something is stressing/ upsetting her outside.

I am definitely going to take her to the vets asap ...

I haven't seen anything outside that's changed with cats etc
She sleeps most of the day and just sits looking out the door - not actually going out there Blush

Unfortunately I can't corner off the area as it's open plan - I have invested in some floor covering and stuck it down using tape; so far it's worked; but she's been pooing on top of that now - but not peeing thankfully; won't hold my breathe though as I'm sure she'll manage to get the covering up soon

Sorry to hear this.

I've read up a lot about this (unfortunately). You need:

  1. Vinegar diluted in water - scrub the area, then wash it with clean warm water.
  2. Enzymatic cleaner eg simple solution - spray double the size of affected area.
  3. Dry out, cover in tin foil. Apparently they don't like this.
  4. Add a dish of dry food to the area and keep it topped up. They don't like toileting where their food is.
  5. When the area is dry, spray surgical spirit on it.

Good luck.

I think urine sample for the vet is the best bet. Then ultraclumping litter because it’s soft on paws and they won’t go in rough litters because it hurts to walk on and Cystease capsules sprinkled into her food.

Update!

I ripped up the carpet and then cleaned the whole area with simple solution like someone recommended.
I then used it again in a carpet cleaner around the carpet that I ripped up - just to make sure it was all gone.
I also got a UV light which showed up some more of the urine in places I hadn't thought she'd been - so scrubbed that too; around the door frame etc

The smell has disappeared- cat has a vet appointment booked; she's now using the litter tray overnight & going outside during the day!
Haven't put more carpet or anything down yet as I want to be 100% she won't do it again. I did get a door mat for wiping our feet for there so we shall see if she starts peeing on that or not Blush

Good news, hopefully she doesn’t have an infection.
