Help with applying flea spot on

My cat has the Frontline flea spot on the back of the neck once a month. It's always a nightmare as someone has to hold her as tightly as possible whilst the other person applies it. As soon as she feels the liquid on the back of the neck she jerks around.

She had to go to the vets for her yearly boosters and they gave her a 3 monthly spot on (Bravecto) but she was constantly scratching her neck for about a week afterwards, so I feel like that's not an option.

The person who was helping me was my boyfriend but we've now split up and the time is coming that she'll need the Frontline again and I just don't know what I'm going to do.

I'm really hoping someone might have so advice 🙏

Wrap tightly in a towel?
Borrow a friendly neighbour?

It’s not something I could do alone as my cat doesn’t even like being picked up so wishing you luck.

Drop it on when she is eating.

Have you got someone who can take your BF place and help you? A friend or neighbour?

If not mine gets theirs while they are eating, but to be fair they aren't that bothered about being flead. If it's tablets/eye drops etc, then I go for the tightly wrapped towel on the kitchen counter and basically squashing them still by leaning on them. It ain't pretty but I'm just as bloody mined as they are, and I do it with confidence, aiming to get it done in one, as quickly as possible so it's the least stressful for us both.

Once it's done I spoil them with tuna/cheese/salmon to avoid getting the cold shoulder and so they forget all about it,

I do mine when she's asleep. I stoke her and smooth the hair apart until I can see the skin and drop it on. By the time she's realised what's happening it's done.

Likelix smeared across a plate. Add drops on neck while cat is madly guzzling likelix. We have to do this to groom ours. He’s psychotic if you show him a brush.

I struggle with this as well. My cat now has a tablet called Credelio...small, VERY strongly chicken scented lol, she gobbles it down...and that's not normal for her and tablets..might be worth a try?

purpleme12 · 17/04/2023 00:39

I'm on my own.
The way I do it I grab them and somehow manage to get them in between my legs (sit down with my legs out in front of me) so my legs are holding them there.
Yes you have to be fairly forceful/tight but this is the way I've found to do it.
Then put it on.

I put the pipette in my jeans pocket
or bra for a good half hour so then liquid has warmed up so it’s less of a shock.

That ^^
Get her used to having the fur ruffled and parted and messed with for a while before you do it
Then I squeeze it on as fast as possible, and if they wake up indignant, have a piece of chicken to hand Grin

Thank you all so much for your tips and tricks! Definitely lots of things I hadn't thought of trying!

Spot on on the back of the neck.

Make sure they are sleeping heavily. Rehearse your moves quietly....

Open spot on in another room. The smell will wake them!

Get in quickly, part hair on the back of the neck with fingers of one hand and swiftly deposit the contents with the other.

You have less than five seconds.

Beamur · 17/04/2023 08:42

Open in another room (my cat can smell it instantly)
Sneak up on sleeping cat.
Administer quickly.
Warming it first is a genius idea.

Another vote for distraction by Dreamies Lickies.

My cat bobs about when eating his dried food or Dreamies but a tube of Dreamies Lickies and he’s totally focussed on that and oblivious of the flea lotion.

My cats were/are long-haired, always a nightmare trying to ensure that treatment got onto their skin.

Ask your vet if they offer Program injections - given every six months and we are all much happier!

tatyr · 21/04/2023 18:36

Thanks for suggestions, my cat is pretty long haired and last month bolted during the spot on treatment. The liquid ran into her ruff fur and matted, which she obviously wouldn't my let me near to do anything about. Ultimately I've had to clip out the matting. So on the lookout for alternative treatments
