Kitten keeps mounting/ambushing older cat

Hi everyone,
We have two cats, both rescues, both neutered/spayed. The older cat is a tiny little female who was born feral and came to the rescue as a kitten during the pandemic and due to growing up when guests were not allowed she was not very well socialised and remains very timid and shy. We had another rescue cat who was a bit older than her who died very unexpectedly last year from a sudden illness. We were all devastated and decided to adopt another cat and found a lovely cuddly 13 week old boy from our local rescue.

To start with the timid cat and him got on fine, they were not cuddling together or grooming one another but happily sleeping next to each other, no fighting or anything.

The kitten is now 10 months old and already much bigger and heavier than the timid cat. Over the last couple of months he has started ambushing the timid cat, he mounts her and bites her neck or tries to pin her down. Obviously the timid cat is not happy about this.

Is this a dominance thing or just play or something else? We try and tire the kitten out with play which helps for a bit but he still keeps doing that whenever there is an opportunity.

Is this likely to be just a phase or something that may escalate further? Is there anything we can do to help the timid cat?

Has he been neutered?

EatYourFive · 14/04/2023 11:55

Yes he was neutered when he was around 4 months old.

Does your timid cat have somewhere safe she can escape to where the other cat can't get at her?
Does sound like a dominance thing and hopefully more experienced and knowledgeable cat slaves will be along with good advice in a minute!

It is normal for kittens to play ..
does it feel or look right ?
they do love a bit of rough and tumble and it is play usually

We ended up splitting them up overnight. Dd's were being kept awake with shannanigans all night!

The kitten is a feisty little so and so....hahah and is showing dominance.

The kitten is assertive.

Thanks everyone. Yes there should be enough room for both cats in the house but they seem to like the same rooms to hang out..🙄

I would think it's part play part dominance, it seems to happen most when the kitten is in 'hyper mode' but oftentimes it seems to come out of nowhere ie. when the kittens sees the timid cat snoozing on the bed he just has to go and pounce on her.
Timid cat is not happy about it at all, probably doesn't help that the kitten is so much bigger than her now. Timid cat is fully grown and only weighs 2.5 kg whereas the kitten at 10 months already weighs 4 kg, hoping he's not going to get much bigger than this!!!

Just spray the attacking cat with a jet of water from a spray bottle. He will soon associate the bad behaviour with getting wet and stop doing it.
