Hey everyone,

So the one eyed cat went and couldn't adopt sadly but have my eye on another now. Going to just go all out and prepare for my next cat and buy everything so, I'm here for recommendations on the following please...

  1. Litter tray, open or hooded?
  2. Which litter is best?
  3. What's the most nutritious cat food?
  4. Any recommendations on cat beds and cat trees please.
  5. Is feliway any good?

Thanks!

Litter tray with hood for sure or it will end up everywhere and I use ultra clumping (Tesco).
I steer clear of whiskas and felix as they aren’t great quality. Mine eat mainly dry but I give them pate too, they just lick off the gravy from anything else.
Feliway had no affect on mine!
I got a great floor to ceiling cat tree that reaches the ceiling from Wayfair.

Litter tray with a hood, definitely!
Cats Best Original cat litter, clumps brilliantly. Seems expensive but works out the same or cheaper in the long run (cheapest from ZooPlus online) The 40L sack lasts us three months.
Cat beds - cats never seem to want them when they're brand new. We've found the best way to get them to use a new bed is to get your own scent on it. So put an old (worn, not fresh out of the wardrobe!) tshirt in there. This has never failed with our cats!
Have never tried Feliway.

I wish I could edit my previous post!! I meant the 40 litre sack lasts us months! Not three months. More than three months Grin

Some cats will love cat beds, some will only be interested in human furniture. Or cardboard boxes. No idea why but most of them seem to adore cardboard boxes.

Not all cats like hooded trays and it can be grim if you have a cat who splatters up the sides. Some of the little darlings are also quite good at getting it in their paws, so an anti-tracking mat can help.

Best litter: Pets at Home Ultra-Freshness. Clumping is way easier than non-clumping, but you use more litter.

Best food: Classic Cat is v affordable, high meat content and grain free. For kibble: James Wellbeloved.

Cat beds: They will sleep where they want and a rescue cat may want company. If you are very keen on them sleeping in a particular spot, a heated pad may help.

Cat trees: No idea, sorry.

Feliway - It does work if you have a very nervous cat. If you have a very outgoing cat, you may not need it. Go at your cat's pace. DCat arrived at 12pm, was ready to leave his room at 6pm and on my knee by 10pm. Previous cats have been very nervous for several days.

Litter tray, litter and food ideally buy at last minute so you can match what they're used to in rescue.

I use ceramic bowls (Mason Cash ones) as they don't move around and are easy to clean. Plastic get a bit grim and stainless steel have a prison vibe.

Vertical and horizontal scratcher.

Cheap bed.

Decent cat carrier, I like the metal ones (eg Metalcote) as they are super secure, last forever and easiest to get cat into.

Toys, loads to choose from, get a variety.

1 - depends on the cat
2 - depends on the cat
3 - depends on the cat and what they'll eat (can you see a trend here?!)
4 - I wouldn't waste money on a cat bed, just lots of trees and scratching posts - there are tons online.
5 - never needed to use it.

I wouldn't buy much (if anything) until you know what your cat likes or dislikes. We have to use fine corn litter as one of mine won't use clay whereas another won't use wood chip. None of them like hooded trays.

They'll all eat Felix AGAIL in jelly but won't touch anything more "nutritious" - the kitten came to us on kitten Whiskas but wouldn't touch the adult version Hmm
