Looks like we are being adopted

The fluff ball in the picture sauntered in to my house a few days ago and has been hanging around since. It's very friendly, so much so that Apollo doesn't chase it away(he's just visible under the chair).

I gave it a few biscuits this afternoon and it camped outside the kitchen door tonight. It's very chirpy as though it's trying to tell me something. I wouldn't be surprised if it works out how to get in through the cat flap. I can't make the flap Out only as Apollo doesn't stay out all night.

What are the chances that within a few days we will have a new family member?

People who have replied angrily to OP like myself were going off the original OP where scanning/ vets etc weren't mentioned.

It's only since people correctly pointed out you can't just adopt a cat that turns up that suddenly OP's tune changed and the cat is now matted/ dirty/ she is taking it to a vet.

Can people really not understand why a badly worded OP might cause angry responses?

Exactly. It always happens on these threads. I don't know why cat theft doesn't seem to be taken as seriously as dog theft.

Can you imagine if you posted "Looks like we are being adopted" in the Doghouse about a stray dog?

verdantverdure · 05/04/2023 17:55

That's why you chip your cats though, right?

whenshallwethreemeet · 05/04/2023 18:21

I've got my cat chipped in case she gets run over. I haven't got her chipped in case she behaves in a perfectly normal way for a cat and goes wandering around people's gardens only for some person to decide to catch her and take her to the vet as she happens to be a bit skinny and unkempt looking and a sucker for a treat.

This. The OP made no mention of concern, or what she’d do to help, in the first post. It was all “how many days until we have a new family member …”

Say your skinny and unkempt cat wandered too far and got lost, would it be ok for someone to get her scanned, so she can be reunited with you ? or is it’s strictly if she gets run over.

It’s precisely because cats are not valued as much as dogs, that they are often abandoned and left behind, when people move houses, decide to get a ‘proper pet’, get bored. Etc. Theres approx 800,000 stray cats in the uk, funnily enough we don’t have an epidemic of stray dogs wondering the streets in 2023.

I doubt anyone in the dog house will be telling someone that found a skinny and unkempt looking dog, to just ignore it, it’ll probably have an owner.

ShowOfHands · 05/04/2023 21:30

There isn't a day goes by without somebody posting on our local community page that they've "found" a cat in their garden. Cue all the people offering it a home, schlepping out with mobile scanners, recommending local charities who will help etc. 99.9% of the time, it's just a cat having a wander and a weary owner posts "yeah he's mine, he's well fed and happy, please stop capturing him". My mate's ginger tom is a lying liar who lies and tells the whole village he is starving. He also happens to have a wonky leg (born that way, not in pain, just a bit wonky) and on a monthly basis, somebody drags him to a vet because he's starving and injured.

It's like a local sport.

Mardiarse · 05/04/2023 21:39

@ShowOfHands Aside from clueless people that don’t know the difference between a normal looking healthy cat and one that is looking skinny and unkempt, or in the example you’ve given wobbling on one leg, is it not better to be safe than sorry, in case the animal is in genuine need.
I honestly think it’s nice that people are community minded and are willing to help animals, even if it’s not warranted sometimes.

You are joking aren't you ? The amount of dogs being abandoned is like nothing we've ever seen before. Let's not make this cats v dogs. Any animal left to fend for itself is so sad.

We don’t . You’ll get them being handed over to pet charities and other authorities, but dogs are not left to wander the streets if they become abandoned, in the way cats are.

In that case, they could post "anybody know this cat?" rather than "omg this poor thing [photo of happy healthy cat sunning itself] is in my garden and has eaten a handful of Dreamies. Must have been starving. Can somebody get here to scan asap or help me with a carrier to get to the vets?"

Or just before Christmas, I give you the example of aforementioned ginger tom being posted on FB yet again and a batshit local replied "apparently, he's a happy and healthy cat but I don't believe it and I will continue feeding him tuna and taking him to the vets until somebody does something". My friend replied and pointed out that the vet had told her both times that tuna was bad for Gary, there's nothing wrong with him and she should leave him be. The response: "I don't care, I won't have a starving cat wandering around as long as I can help. I will feed him and take him in every time." This isn't community spirit, it's batshittery.

Several cats pass through my garden daily. All of them are healthy and having a wander. I've never posted about any of them on FB but I've seen them all on there.

Natfrances · 05/04/2023 22:38

If I was worried about a cat that kept appearing in my garden I would take it to the vet to get it scanned. If my cat went missing I would hope someone would do this if my cat was trying to get in their house or were in their garden alot. Cats shouldn't just be ignored and you should just assume they have a home somewhere, they could be a stray or be neglected by the owner. Please do what u can for this cat. Feed it, keep it safe and try to trace the owner.

SwimmingAgainstTheTides · 05/04/2023 23:17

Most cats try their luck, and some are just looking for company. I buy mine collars off Amazon, "Do not feed" and "l have a loving home" as well as micro chipping them.

DiscoBeat · 05/04/2023 23:58

We had a cat visit regularly, telling us that it was destitute and starving. The well fed feline was just trying it on, as found by a quick local Facebook check, so he didn't get another dinner after all!

Hear, Hear.

We wouldn't have hundreds of thousands of stray cats in this country if people did.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 06/04/2023 07:37

Just because a cat regularly appears in your garden and repeatedly tries to get into your house, it doesn't necessarily mean it is a stray.

I speak from experience 🤣.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 06/04/2023 07:39

And @ShowOfHands - I'd love to see a photo of Gary please.

@ShowOfHands. Facebook community groups get all sorts. In amongst those posts will be animals that are in genuine need.
Gary’s ‘friend’ would be doing that without the aide of Facebook, at least you know what’s going on if they’re documenting it in a public forum.

Eggseggseverywhere · 06/04/2023 10:33

When my dd had a dcat in her garden for 2 weeks she posted on local fb page a pic. A lady sent pics back of her indoor dcat who had gotten out 2 weeks ago.
An emotional reunion!
Ignore the awful posters op. Take it to a vet for chip checked!

Well yes there are plenty of genuine posts too and hurrah for cat lovers (I am one) and have reunited a cat with its owners via social media. I wasn't talking about them. I was talking about the people who leap to panic stations and haul healthy and happy cats to a vet the second they wander through their prize astilbes.
