Moving House

Hello!

We move house in a couple of weeks, just around a 15 minute drive from our current house. We're planning on keeping the cat in one room, the vet has said two weeks, is it best for her to have constant company or will us popping in every hour or so be ok? I'm worried her being shut away for so long will cause her more stress. We have feliway spray and are getting a plug in tomorrow. What else do I need to do to keep her calm? Thank you in advance!

I'd put mine in the cattery until everything was more settled.

Why does she need to be kept in one room?

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 29/03/2023 07:13

Thank you!

I'm not sure why just the one room, the vet mentioned it when she had her boosters. I had looked at a cattery but I honestly think that would stress her even more. My oldest has said she will stay in the room with her so she will have company at least.

I've never, ever heard of keeping a cat in one room when you move house.

Mine would be so stressed and miserable living like that for a day, let alone two weeks!

I think your meant to keep cat In one room on moving day, and then slowly let her explore the house , with loads of litter trays around for minimum of 2 weeks.

I had no idea this was a thing. I moved 2 weeks ago and just showed the cats where their litter tray was and where their water and food bowls were. They were absolutely fine. A bit inquisitive about the new house, went round sniffing everything but no sign of distress.

Good luck, hope all goes well.

I’ve never restricted it to one room but try to keep them in for 2 weeks.

I moved a few months ago
The first thing I did was get her settled in the smallest room, a catnip toy, a tshirt of mine on her bed, food, water. I left her cat carrier open so if she felt overwhelmed with the noise and bustle outside she could retreat
A note on the door not to open it
Popped in every hour or so, she was fast asleep on her bed
Once every one had gone and it was calm I opened the door and let her come out in her own time and explore
Kept her in for 2 weeks and when it was time I opened the back door to the garden and just let her do her thing in her own time
She's very chilled out in her new home now

And her litter tray!

I think keeping the cat in the one room would usually be just for the move day.

Ours have always settled well. We moved a similar distance and just let the cats out straight away, as one of ours gets very anxious if they can’t get outside (rescue cat with a sad pre-us history). The advice is to keep them in for a couple of weeks though to get used to the new house.

Bag up the (lightly used) litter tray litter as you leave, so you have it already familiar smelling ready to use in the litter tray at new home, leaving cat in no doubt as to where their litter tray is.

I moved recently and keep our cat in the house for a couple of weeks. We didn't convince him to one room. Hope that helps.
