Cat intruder

I woke up about 10 minutes ago to the sound of cat's shrieking, the type you get in a cat fight, so I went down stairs to investigate.

Attempting to get out through the cat flap was a frightened tabby cat, busted for intruding dcat's territory! Dcat was observing this under the kitchen table while I went over to open the door before locking the cat flap.

We do usually remember to lock the cat flap completely at night but it was in lock in only mode still, and I'd forgotten!

Anyway, I'm still feeling disturbed and wondering whether they are likely to be back, especially during the day when the cat flap isn't locked?

Do you have any cat intruder stories of your own and did your dcat manage to out them in their place?

We have three black cats. Our neighbour also has a black cat.

The neighbours cat once got in through our bathroom window and sat eating our cats' food in the kitchen.

It then wandered into our living room and had a nap on the windowsill. DH spent two hours in the living room with all four cats before realising we had an intruder Grin

Our cats weren't remotely bothered.

How funny your dh didn't realise until 2 hours later!

Yes, we used to have an intruder.

He lives here now....

Iris1976 · 24/03/2023 08:58

I have one since moving in 7 months ago and he's started pissing in my house,so not impressed at all,but cantlock the cat flap as freaks all mine out, going to have to invest in a microchip one.

Did you never find out who it's owner was, or was it a stray?
There's no danger of this cat living with us, as we will not make them welcome! I think I've seen them before, but didn't realise it roamed as far as our cul de sac!

Oh, that's a pain @Iris1976 .
hope you or your cats manage to deter them some how.

I am now wondering whether I should have got a microchip cat flap too. We'd only installed our current one about a month ago after agreeing to adopt dcat.

We have a microchip catflap so the only time we've had an intruder is when the back door has been left open (sliding patio door)

KateAusten · 24/03/2023 12:34

No because we have a Pet safe cat flap

RosieCockle · 24/03/2023 12:41

Yes, you need a microchip one. Be careful though. We had the SureFlap one that needs a chip for the cat to enter - but not to exit. Neighbour’s cat was able to pull the flap towards him and then duck under the flap. But SureFlap were brilliant and sent us the "dual" chip one for free. Big Bang can no longer break in!

Ours is a Pet Safe one too, just not the microchip one.

Hmm, we'll keep an eye in the situation and browse microchip cat flaps in the mean time. It's just a shame that we're already ha ING to replace the cat flap Iif this becomes a regular occurrence.

Another vote for a microchip flap here.

I had an afternoon nap and left the window open I woke up to three cats that were not mine but who decided naptime was a perfect idea all cuddled up to me

that's a bit harsh, you said it was terrified; maybe trying to get away from something.

It's not harsh at all!

It's not OP's cat and she already has a cat that clearly doesn't want an intruder in it's space.

He was very skinny and dirty so had been sneaking into our house to steal our cats food. We managed to catch him (took months!) and took him to the vet.

He was chipped but phone associated with chip was disconnected and no replies to letters sent to the address. He wasn't neutered either.

So we got him neutered, changed the chip to our name and he's now having a very fat & happy life with us. Still wolfs food down like he doesn't know where his next meal is coming from!

Is shooing and chasing the cat away harsh? I'm not talking g about astray, helpless cat here. He entered our home and I got up to let it out.

It seemed frightened because it kept banging itself on the cat flap , not realising it was locked one way.

I'm pleased to read that he had a happy ending.

Made me laugh my head off🤣

Crumpledstilstkin · 24/03/2023 14:17

I had a cat years ago that did this. Used to get the call every afternoon to come fetch him and would have to walk back with him in the carrier. It was embarrassing. No we never found a solution.

CollieEye · 24/03/2023 20:13

Our neighbour's queen cat used to come into our house via the cat flap while we were out and sit on our lounge windowsill or kitchen cabinets. We didn't realise this until one day we arrived home to have the neighbour (newly moved in) apologising profusely to us, explaining that HRH refused to move even though she'd been waving Dreamies at her through the window and cat flap. We had three boy cats who didn't give a damn about the intrusion, and would sit next to her quite happily, or pop out for a Dreamie seeing as they were being offered.

Oh, we had a dog then too. Border Collie also loved the new cat interloper and would sit next to the cat flap, letting her in, but not letting her out again.
