Help!!!
Our boys won't go to the loo outside, and they are so stinky!!!

How can we teach them to go outside?

I didn't read which topic this was in and got very confused!

No suggestions I'm afraid but they are verrry cute!

Create a private area in your garden with nice loose soil. When they use the litter tray scoop their poop and take it to their outside loo and show them. Keep doing that and they'll learn. Make sure you clean the area regularly and turn the soil too. If it gets littered with shit they'll stop using it.
They have a catflap I assume and so can get out at any time?

It will happen when it happens. One of mine started going outside before the other but the 2nd got there in the end. I didn't do anything to prompt them and they did it by themselves

What sort of litter do you use? Some can get smellier than others

7 months is quite early to expect them to do the toilet outside. I assume they are neutered and microchipped?

Our 7 month old boy has just started going to the toilet outside in our flowerbed the last couple of weeks.
No prompting but we don’t have a cat flap, which may have helped make that decision for him. He’s in overnight so still uses the litter tray but it is far less and he actually asks to go out in the mornings now to do his ablutions 😂

Sorry i completely forgot i posted this 😅

To answer some questions,

We use a mix of wood litter and catsan.

They are both microchipped and neutered, they have only been going our for a few weeks cause we didn't let them outside till they were chipped.

We do have a cat flap, we plan to switch it to a microchip one, so for now they are shut in at night as they is a cat they are scared off in the neighbourhood.

They can get out of very inclosed garden, one tends to stay in and close to home and the other is usually off exploring.

We have a small garden with borders that are small stones, maybe i should switch them to flower beds to help encourage it. I have moved their baby litter tray outside, under a bench so far they have trashed it.

Thanks all

Our cat just suddenly took herself to a secluded spot at the back of the garden, and has rarely ever used the tray again - that was six years ago. We keep her in overnight and in the day while we’re at work, so we do have three litter trays dotted around, but she’s learned to go out to do her business first thing and then hang on until someone gets home about 5. Even in rotten weather she prefers to go out.

If there's a cat out there that they are scared of, then they'll prefer to go to the loo in their trays until they get big. Cats are very particular about only like going where they feel 100% safe, unfortunately.

I'm a bit drunk and thought you were talking about human babies 😂

MidlandCatGirl · 29/03/2023 20:02

What are you feeding them? Gradually wean them over to a high meat % food (if not already on one), this will really reduce the poop smell.

I switched my rescue from Purina to Scrumbles for breakfast and a raw meat sachet for dinner. He still has snacks (Dreamies, those cat meat stick things) but his poop has the most minimal of odour.

As he was in the ‘holding area’ of the vets and rescue for a long time, he is so used to toileting indoors. He may do the odd wee outside but he holds those poops in as a special gift for me 😂. I use a corn based litter which is great and may also be contributing to the lack of stink.

Thank you all.

They have started to go outside. We have a mini mud pit at the back of the garden that my toddler plays in. We have stopped the toddler playing in it and have transferred the cat poop to the large grassy waste land behind our garden to encourage the cats to toliet there instead. Hopefully they switch to that area soon enough.

I have also had a lecture from my sister about allowing my cats to poo outside 🙃
