What breeds are similar in temperament to dcat?

I have an amazing cat that's unlike any I've had before he's 7 and hopefully he has a long life ahead of him. He has given me so much joy and hopefully in future there's other cats like him? He's so cuddly , vocal , plays games , can open doors , follows me to the shop. I can take him on walks as his recall is brilliant no lead needed. He's a moggy but mum was bengal. I'm wondering if any other breeds have similar traits. I've heard full Bengals can be a pain behaviour wise.

Oriental breeds tick most of those boxes. I have oriental short haired. They don't lead walk, they do go out but freak out if they see me outdoors and follow me but not in a relaxed way! My moggy comes for a stroll though. He's much more streetwise.
A Bengal cross is a much more sensible option than a Bengal. Even the crosses can be a bit much though.

My cat was very intelligent and knew what a lot of words meant and was very teachable. Cuddly, played games, loved being my shadow. She was a Tabby.

Another cat i looked after was similar but not biddable in the sense if she didn't want to do it she walked off , she could open doors, even tried to turn the key in the lock. She was more intelligent than the tabby but had attitude to go with it. She was a normal short-haired black and white moggy.

I think its more to individual personality rather than breed, same as for humans. Do you think your cat would enjoy having another around or would prefer to be the only child? Both of mine chased other cats away (and foxes and squirrels and stared down dogs) but adored humans.

Norwegian Forest Cats are a bit like this.

But Bengals are the most 'dog like' of cats.

Yes he's very needy but I don't think I could cope with a stereotypical cat now as he's so entertaining. The good outweighs the bad by so much. I don't want another cat as he's happy alone it's more I was worrying that I won't be able to find a cat with similar traits in future. He's such a joy.

I had a sphynx cat who was like this. He was the best cat in the world.

I've also had 2 other sphynx, they're lovely and one plays fetch, will walk on a harness etc. but they're not the same as him

Its about the individual cat not the breed

Burmese cats are usually like this - off the scale affectionate, vocal, generally prefer affection to food, will follow you like a dog, play fetch if you teach them. Very human focussed for cats!

Manxes are very doglike as well, very loyal and charming.

Siamese are renowned for their intelligence. They sound a bit unsettling when they yowl at you though, which is basically constantly.

My moggy is like this. I think male moggies who've been very well socialised from a young age will do many of these things.

If you pick a bengal breeder for temperament then you will likely get the closest to your requirements.
i really dont understand All the bengal horror stories, i had at least one for the last 30 yrs now. They've all beenlovely natured cats, not had a problem.

Siberians are playful, intelligent, chirpy, affectionate. Pricey, but delightful creatures.

I'm not sure if it's inexperienced cat owners? I've always had cats since being a toddler so it's all I know. I initially struggled with Dcat being so different to what I was used too I think he definitely think he has a lot of Bengal traits🤣 but he's brilliant I don't think I could go back to a stereotypical aloof cat.

I understand, i would do my research and visit few breeders before selecting, but it sounds like you are a bengal girl!

I've had 3 bengals, all from the same breeder and from the same parents - two from one litter, one from their next litter a year later. All are as you have described, no horror stories here, lovely loving cats who are very cuddly, very vocal, will play fetch and other similar games, very intelligent can open doors and cupboards (we had to put child locks on the cupboards we didn't want them going in), had absolutely no aggression from any of them - they are loved by all the neighbours and never had any issues with other local cats. Not sure if I've just been lucky with a very good breeder but I wouldn't be without them Smile

We have an angora and she is exactly as you describe. She is the most inquisitive little soul, and likes to join in with anything and everything. Costs us a fortune in electric though, as she’s learned to turn on all of the lamps! Not such a fun game at 4am!

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 25/03/2023 08:16

Bengals aren’t naughty. Their just intelligent with a zest for life.

Arabian Mau.

Mine is ridiculously loud, knows no fear, strong misplaced belief that anyone who sees him will love him, and will follow us back home through the village. He also outsmarts us all the time.
