Is it ok to leave cat with cat bite ( I think) until the morning?

So there is a horrible huge aggressive cat that keeps attacking my little cat and pinning him down.

little cat is now limping on one of the front legs, and in pain. Eating a little bit but not loads. Can’t see any bite but he has very thick fur - I bathed the general area with salt water which obviously hurt.

Vets don’t have any appointments until tomorrow morning - their advice was it wasn’t ideal to leave a bite until then so perhaps try their emergency vet service. Emergency service is obviously very expensive and really difficult to get to ( inn a single mum, 2 kids, no car).

Im in two minds about what to do - should I try the emergency vets do people think?

İ wouldn't leave it till tomorrow; I think cat bites are prone to infection and need prompt treatment.

Shmithecat2 · 22/03/2023 16:13

Your cat is in pain and most likely has an awful abcess causing it physical distress which salt water won't fix. I couldn't leave it til morning, that seems cruel.

Asummersday · 22/03/2023 16:13

Yes emergency vets are expensive……you could try VETSNOW, they will do video consult with you. It’s about £25 and give more advice. If u then need emergency appointment, the £25 will be credited towards that

I would phone back and say he's very painful and so can they see him as an extra today. I bet they don't shut until 7 and so presumably the emergency vet wouldn't open until then.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/03/2023 16:14

As long as the appt is first thing I would leave it and bathe again with salt water. Had to do similar recently after paying over £500 at the emergent bet and the insurance wouldn't pay out.

Theunamedcat · 22/03/2023 16:19

Can you not ring around other vets see if you can get her seen? Has she been bitten today it won't abcess instantly but something else could have happened

Lemursandions · 22/03/2023 16:34

Other vets won’t see as not on their books and it isn’t an emergency as in life or death - I did try the other vet round here. Own vets defo won’t see him today despite saying it isn’t ideal and he should be seen.

Yes he’s only been bitten today and there isn’t an abcess yet. I don’t think online consult would work sadly as have been here before and it’s defo a bite that I imagine will be given antibiotics for.

I guess I will try the emergency vets. I’m not huge fans of them as the last time this happened they missed two huge puncture wounds that the regular vet found the next day.

Am so sick of this other bloody cat tbh - he’s huge and comes into the garden right up to the back door and pins my cats down and attacks them regularly.

Maybe your own vets would allow you to collect some pain relief today for overnight and then see him in the morning

Beamur · 22/03/2023 16:51

It's uncomfortable but not life or death.
I'd take the morning appointment but ask if they could dispense some pain relief tonight.
One of my cats has just had a sore paw - probably a bite. I took him to the vet when I noticed so it was probably quite a few hours after it had happened. Vet gave an injection which lasted for 2 weeks - antibiotics and pain relief daily. An abscess probably formed and burst after a week. It has healed perfectly well.

Lemursandions · 22/03/2023 20:59

So I took him to the emergency vets - they couldn’t see any bite and so wonder if he’s sprained it. As he didn’t have a temperature they didn’t give him antibiotics ( but said if he develops an abcess to send a photo and they will sort out a prescription).

Did give an anti inflammatory injection ( that I think is also pain relief). He’s still definitely not himself - hopefully will be a bit brighter tomorrow.

Vet thought could be a sprain

@Lemursandions how is your little cat today?

Lemursandions · 23/03/2023 19:06

He’s a lot brighter and back to his super friendly self, yowling at me to go outside ( which he can’t) thank you Pud.

Need to try and give him the metacam shortly which will be interesting …

Do you have any lick-e-lix? All of my cats go mad for it. I've just had to give meds to one of mine for the last 2 weeks and have mixed it in with a sachet of this and he has hoovered it up.

Lemursandions · 23/03/2023 20:03

No - should have thought. It’s liquid so think will have to try squirting in his mouth - he’s not very food oriented and the other cat would no doubt hoover it up if I left it out

AnnaMagnani · 23/03/2023 21:12

I've never had an issue with Metacam, even the fussy cats haven't noticed it on their food.

Keep other cat away and drip it on a small amount of treat food.

SprinkleRainbow · 23/03/2023 21:33

I treated my cats absess at home, although I had the advice of a veterinary nurse as well.
It ruptured on its own, so I cleaned it all out and kept cleaning every 3 hours with salt water. My cat was absolutely fine in themselves, or I'd have gone straight to a vet. It was very very gross though!
Can't be certain but fairly likely it was another cat that has attacked mine before

Good your cat is on the mend!
