Are there any decent non-vet flea treatments?

I’m in the vets’ monthly club which includes flea and worm treatment, but it’s going up to £16 a month. I’ve got three cats so it’s a significant cost. It does also include their vaccinations but I think even if I pay for those when they go, I could still save money if I cancelled club membership. But are there any flea treatments that aren’t prescription only which actually work and the fleas aren’t resistant to?

I use Advantage for fleas, which still works here.

If yours take tablets ok then Drontal is very cost effective for worming.

You can buy generic versions of flea and worm treatment from websites like Vetmeds for pence. Just check the active ingredients in the one your vet gives you and match it up. There are loads of websites and I've used a few different ones.

For example with flea stuff for my dog I was paying £30+ at the vet for frontline flea and tick and it was £7 on the web for the generic stuff. Worming tablets were £1 from Vetmeds.

You can think of it like supermarket ibruprofen is 40p and Nurofen is £3 and it's the same stuff.

Fipronil based products like Frontline mostly don't work though.

We pay £7 including delivery for Itch. The first month is free.

I use Advantage which I buy from places like Viovet. Still works for fleas <hopes hasnt jinxed meself>

Prescription stuff is the only ones that will work . Our vets have a breakdown of the cost if not in the pet plan and it does save about £150 per year . Itch pet and the likes will not work any better than buying OTC from a pet shop .

This is my worry, I know the fleas are resistant to Frontline and a lot of others. It just still seems so expensive every month though.

Ours have the program injection every 6 months and that’s covered by the plan

So I’ve been Googling and my vet stuff is selomectrin, which has the brand-name Stronghold. It’s loads cheaper online but you need a prescription to buy it. Will my vet write me one? I know they’ll charge for this.

Your vet will write a prescription for you, but the cost of writing that prescription may mean the cost of the product doesn't work out much cheaper. Worth asking.

Alternatively, try Advantage. It used to be prescription only, but it's now available from online stores like Viovet without prescription. I find it works fine for my five cats.
