5 month old rescue cat is 4 weeks pregnant

This is Wednesday, she’s 5 months old.

I rehomed her just over two weeks ago. She went the vets today for her vaccines, the vet said she’s pregnant, scan confirmed it. I know some people for ethical reasons won’t agree, she’s going in for an emergency spay next week. She’s a baby herself, plenty of kittens needing homes already.

I was wondering if anybody had ever been in this situation? The vet mentioned it’s a midline incision? I’ve also never had done on a cat before? Thanks for reading

You’re doing the right thing! Poor baby

SinisterKnitter · 21/03/2023 15:29

Poor kitty, she's just a baby still too, so well done booking her spay.

I'd have expected the rescue would have spayed and vaxxed her though, it's concerning they didn't.

Pixiedust1234 · 21/03/2023 16:17

My rescue came to me after being spayed by them. The only thing I did differently was place solid boxes or footstools near sofa and beds or windowsills so she didn't have to do big jumps for laps and sleep and bird watching. Since she was new we kept her in for three weeks too, so she didn't jump fences or fight other cats. Its about protecting her tummy/stitches from stretching.

I'm so pleased shes getting spayed as she's way too young herself (nature is cruel) and she might not have been able to give birth naturally anyway.

Poor little thing 😭

Bad boy cat 🐱 shagging her!

Mavericksaviators · 21/03/2023 16:49

She was from a lady in the street who was going back to the Ukraine.

You're doing the right thing, in my view, too.

I foster pregnant cats, but a 5-month kitten is not fit to be a mum. (Last time I was at the rescue centre, they had a 4-month pregnant kitten in for an emergency spay-abort as the better option.)

clocktock · 21/03/2023 16:53

Yeah it happened to us and we also opted for the spay. She was so young I was shocked. Anyway it went ok. She had a midline scar. We kept her warm and comfortable (bed by the fireplace). Kept her confined to the living room and kitchen for a week. She recovered very well apart from some constipation that the vet prescribed some laxative for. Took a hood four weeks for her to become her usual playful self x

It’s not a bad thing to do, she’s a kitten herself. Poor girl.

Out little female had this too.
She was pregnant at rescue so they did an emergency Spey.
Very common

Iris1976 · 21/03/2023 17:21

Absolutely doing the right thing for her bless her,I rehomed a 15 month old who was 6 weeks pregnant and couldn't get a vet,she birthed 5,first was breech and got stuck,I nearly lost them all,the breech died 24 hrs later, I now have 4 cats and my mum has 1 of the kittens, all spayed neutered.

Floralnomad · 21/03/2023 17:32

You are absolutely doing the right thing however your title is misleading as she is not a rescue cat .

I do apologise. The fact she was literally dumped on my doorstep in a carrier, then drove off on the way to the airport. I class that as rescuing. Whatever you say on here seems to piss off someone. Thanks everyone for your kind words

Poor little kitten. I hope all goes well for her.

Poor little thing. That’s definitely the best for her.

Jesus Christ have a day off 😂

OP you are doing the right thing. Babies should not be having babies. Please keep us updated on your lovely girl.

Floralnomad · 21/03/2023 20:53

The issue with the thread title is that rescues , on the whole , do not give out unneutered cats and anyone just looking at the title will be getting the wrong impression .

Mercy1968 · 21/03/2023 23:40

You are doing the right thing. She's too little to have babies safely.
Shes beautiful too by the way x

Whydoineedaname · 27/03/2023 14:10

I’m the op, she’s going tomorrow for her spay. Hopefully it will all go ok

Allergictoironing · 27/03/2023 14:19

Good luck OP. She should be fine 😀

Want2beme · 27/03/2023 15:46

When one of the mine came to me, I thought she was pregnant. She wasn't as young as yours. I had her spayed and felt terrible about her possibly being pregnant. The vet said he wouldn't tell me if she was or wasn't, and I didnt ask.

If possible, keep her in a cage for a few days. If not, try to ensure she doesn't jump high up

thecatneuterer · 27/03/2023 16:14

You are totally doing the right thing. Mid line is common for gravid spays. It's also the usual method of spaying in a lot of countries (as opposed to flank -i.e. on the side). I would give her at least a week and preferably ten days before she goes out after the op, whereas with flank spays 4 or 5 days is fine. Apart from that there's not much difference.

Twizbe · 27/03/2023 16:34

Poor cat. This is the right decision. I suspect her previous owner knew she was pregnant and didn't want to deal with it.

This happened to my DH when he was younger too. A cat adopted them and when they took it to the vet found she was pregnant. They aborted as well. They had no idea how old the cat was. The cat lived with them for years so must have liked them.
