Can anyone recommend some dry cat food please?

Hi,
The vet has told us that the mog needs to have dry cat food due to the build up of plaque on her teeth since they were cleaned in September.
The problem we have is that she goes on hunger strike and won't eat anything we've previously tried. It was so long ago we can't even remember what it was.
Is there anything we can get in relatively small sizing to see if she will actually eat it?

We use Purina One dry cat food and ours love it, the vet even said both their teeth were spotless at their last check up. You can buy 750g bags which are quite small to try. Can get it in supermarkets and pet stores.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that.

Have a look at Hills Science Plan dental food - it's one my fussy moggy scarfed. It's not the best nutritionally but it seems to be tasty for them.

Weve had ours on Royal Canin for years and they love it. There are loads of different ones for female, male, indoor, outdoor etc.

Thanks, I want to get something that's easily available in small quantities as I suspect she's going to refuse it

Pets at Home do smaller sized bags of some dried food. I got some recently for our kittens to try out.
You could also try asking on a local Facebook freebie page? Some people might have food to pass on if their cat if no longer interested etc.

Our old cat used to have the Hills Science Plan Senior as the bits were smaller and softer so a bit kinder on his old teeth! Kittens are currently enjoying Purina ProPlan

We use Canagan dental. The cats go nuts for it.

Beamur · 16/03/2023 11:47

James Wellbeloved do a dental one - it's good and meant our cat didn't need a dental treatment after switching to it for several months. But the nuggets are big. If you want to try her on the brand with a small size kibble first - try either the grain free (which is very small) or the standard. I switch between all three - one of my cats skin responds really well to grain free but my older cat needs the dental one.
I get the turkey flavour and they all seem to find it very palatable. I used to have to limit my previous cats access to this brand as he loved it so much he would gulp it down until he was sick!

If you have an independent pet shop near you they quite often sell dry food in smaller quantities.

Glittertwins · 16/03/2023 11:52

We might have an independent shop, will send DH out at the weekend as I'm not around

Most vets will give or sell you samples of dried food. Maybe try the vets at Pets At Home if yours don't sell it? I've bought small sample sized packs there before. Our local independent only sells full sized bags.

Glittertwins · 16/03/2023 13:15

Weirdly the vet didn't give us a sample pouch it even ask to buy a couple. Anyway, plenty of recommendations here so fingers crossed Her Highness accepts one of them!!!

Another Royal Canin recommendation here. The "fussy cats" variety is the only dry food our cat would eat for years. She's on the senior 12+ years now and still happily eating that and refusing everything else.

Glittertwins · 17/03/2023 12:44

Got given Royal Canin by a friend for testing out and some of it has been eaten. Will see how it goes

There is very little evidence to suggest that dry food has any impact on dental health.

You can get cat toothbrushes if your cat is particularly kind and compliant. Mine won't do any kind of brushing but he will chew on it when offered which I feel is better than nothing! Grin

Thrive is a healthy grain-free dry food, or Catit Nuna which is insect based. The Nuna is so nice we use it as treats.

Glittertwins · 18/03/2023 17:44

Thanks @unvillage - we can look into brushing.

My cat is on Royal Canin Oral Care and Royal Canon Ageing 12+. He has had six teeth out in the past but he manages the biscuits well. He likes the dental ones best.

He does have plaque on his teeth but there is no way I would attempt to try and clean them with a toothbrush. I'd have no hands left and I've already had one lot of strong antibiotics from an infected scratch he kindly gave me, I've no wish to repeat the experience. 😱

I was going to say this. Dry food is often swallowed whole, if not it simply shatters on impact with the teeth and only touches the tips. It's a marketing ploy and a lot of vets fall for it or are told to sell the stuff to boost profits.

I had a row with one vet who insisted it was good stuff and wouldn't accept that I wasn't obliged to buy it because only feed wet food to avoid constipation, kidney problems, allergies and bloating.

A raw chicken wing would clean them better.

Glittertwins · 19/03/2023 06:13

Thank you. We're not keen on moving away from Katkin completely because we have seen a huge difference in her and nowhere close to the amount of vomit we were cleaning up.

I had the fussiest cats ever and the only food I found they would eat was Royal Canine for exigent fussy cats. You can get it online but it is quite expensive.

Craftybodger · 19/03/2023 07:57

I came on to say Royal Canin Oral Care as well. I will buy a smaller bag next 8kg still going on, started last summer!!

redboxer321 · 19/03/2023 08:14

I have come on to say you have had much better advice from @MonumentalLentil and @unvillage than you have the vet.

Have a look at dehydration in dry fed cats too.
I'd give a BARF diet a go in your situation.

I'm sorry to say that I've learnt the hard way that you have to question every single bit of advice the vet gives you. Good luck.

Applaws do an amazing one.
