Ingrown cat claw

Any ideas how much this is going to cost to deal with?

Two of her claws have imbedded into her pads and the area is red and inflamed and looks like it's been bleeding but we haven't seen any blood. This happened after an accident about a week ago (she got under our feet when carrying something and we didn't see her there) but we only just noticed it as she was washing and biting her paw so I looked to check she didn't have anything stuck in it.

We are getting a vet appointment asap but worried as bills are so high everywhere else too. Luckily we have insurance but due to her age we have a high ish excess.

Thanks

I had this in a cat I fostered. Was going to take him to the vet. But he let me cut it off. Didn't need any other treatment. Is your cat amenable to claw cutting?

Toddlerteaplease · 12/03/2023 22:19

A vet nurse may be able to do it.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 12/03/2023 22:22

She will let me hold her paw but won't let me touch it so won't be able to do it myself.

I feel so bad, it was a genuine accident and now she's suffering

Get her to the vet asap it must be very painful.

My cat had this. The vet is the best option as they can see if it's gone into the pad or not. If it's not it's a case of cutting it down if it has like my cat did she needed to be sedated x

@PinkChampange it certainly looks as though it's gone into her pad, poor baby. She's 15 and a house cat and this is the first time we've ever had to take her to the vet other than routine jabs and yearly health checks. Can't help but worry they will judge us for not noticing this immediately

It's not uncommon in older cats as the claws become thickened and they cannot sharpen them as they used to do.
You could wrap her in a big towel with just that paw out and snip it through with a sharp (human) nail clippers. Dip the whole paw in some dilute antiseptic daily for a few days. Check all paws carefully by pressing into the centre of the paw with your finger and thumb to extend the claws. You will have to continue to check affected claws often or go for nail clipping every 4-6 weeks.

My cats claws do this. First time I panicked and I took her to the vets. They just cut the claw before the paw pad and then tweezered the embedded claw out. No sedation and cat was amazing.

it’s happened a few times since. I managed to do it myself. Cat again was great. I trim her claws every few weeks. But she as 1 really curvy claw that seems to grow into her pad. Vet says was age.

I had a thumb cat that managed to get a claw stuck in her paw the vet managed to ease it out with zero sedation gave her a shot of anti inflammatory and antibiotics it was forty quid a few years ago im guessing similar would cost about 60/70 now?

My boy cat has recently damaged his nail bed a check plus take home meds cost me £60 so far but I think he might need antibiotics 🙄 cats! They are a pain in the bank account

I’ve dealt with this at home with an elderly cat. If someone can hold her for you it’s quite simple to clip the claw.

SBHon · 13/03/2023 00:09

The vets will sort it and know if it needs antibiotics or not. It’s quite common in older cats to need to have their claws trimmed a few times a year. The vet will also be able to tell you if that’s the case for yours now.

Sorry I've only just replied to this. How did you get on at the vet?

we were worried we would be judged too. But the vet was just happy to help her feel comfortable again. She was 18 when we had to have her paw done. I believe the older the cat the harder the claws are. I suppose they're like elderly peoples toenails.
A good vet shouldn't judge you. X

She was fine thank goodness. Needed anaesthesia as she wasn't playing ball but all is well. Antibiotics for a week and she seems so much happier all ready. Thank you for asking
