Does an 8 month old kitten need wet food?

Teddy cat is now 8 months old. He's a big lad weighs nearly 4kg, and he's always hungry. He has two pouches a day of Sheba and Royal Canin dry kitten food.

He's not fussed on the dry food but loves the wet. Thing is he loves my other cats urinary dry food, so I'd like to feed them both just that.

So can I drop the wet food now for him, he's perfectly healthy and had a vet check recently but I forgot to ask about his food.

You do have to be particularly careful with male cats that they are getting enough fluids. I would also check with your vet whether urinary food for a cat without issues is good for him - I know sharing renal food with Boycat led to Girlcat piling on the weight really quickly despite her eating if anything less than usual, and since she's gone back on normal food the excess is coming off.

If he enjoys wet food instead of dry why are you thinking of making his life miserable?

Urinary food is based on medical needs so he shouldn't really be scoffing that. Is there a different formulation in the same brand that he might enjoy, eg hairball if he's extra fluffy?

Its starting to be recognised that cats are terrible for not drinking enough water when dehydrated and the wet food helps with that. Being on only dry food can cause kidney issues in later life so the best thing is a mix of both if possible.

If your other cat has urinary problems, he should be getting plenty of wet food every day - is he really only on a diet of dry?

I would have them both on high quality wet food plus the urinary dry food.

I have three cats who all eat the urinary dry food even though only one of them has a medical need for it.

The vet said it was absolutely fine.

I would keep with wet food simply because cats really do like it and need the water content.
Yes it's stinky and expensive.
Is that what's putting you off?
I find the fish pouches make my cat's poo reek so, so badly but I still buy it for them!

Personally I wouldn’t if he likes wet.

Why would you stop the wet food if that's what he likes? Seems a bit mean! Also, shouldn't your other cat be getting wet food, especially if it already has urinary issues? You can add extra water to wet food to help with fluid intake, too.
