Hi all, obviously Ive been on a google marathon regarding this but there is some conflicting advice so wanted real cat owners to weigh in please.
Getting a cat soon. She's two, described as independent, toilets outside, only comes in for bed time.
In my house I have two children (well trained to be laid back around animals) and two dogs.
Ive never had a cat before.
So, I need to keep her in for 3 to 6 weeks to get her to feel at home before letting her out. This is going to involve litter box training. She comes from a multicat household so has seen lb before, but always asks to go out. This is obstacle number one.
Number two, planning on starting her off living in conservatory and attached utility zone. It's more peaceful and the dogs will not be let in there. However it's not as warm as main house, so was wondering if overnight she could go in a large crate in the living room? Or better to just get self warming beds with roof etc? If in large crate overnight would need litter tray, water and snuggly hidey bed?
She needs spaying.obstacle 3. Better to wait a few weeks til she's settled, yes?
Re dog, having never lived with a cat, whats recommended for intros? Swapping blankets for smell? In living room on leads, doors open to other rooms so she can escape?
Also, am I mad? She'll have a lovely life if we get past 1,2and 3. Middle of countryside, lots of stalking ground, access to all downstairs when determined dogs and her can rub along.
Very grateful for all wisdom. Oh and the reason we dont want a kitten is would rather she warned off garden rats sooner than later, like her being streetwise so if she ventures as far as the 1 track lane she wont be surprised and also...have just fallen in love with her!!!

Vet has just said her urine test was fine! So two rounds of antibios and they are doing the scan (we asked for on the first appointment) tomorrow!! Poor little thing. Gynaecological problem we are now left with, as stool sample fine too, so praying that spaying will sort it out and it won't be life threatening. Find out in the morning. Fingers crossed.

Well, scan showed she had pyometra, so spay and chip at same time being done. God, I just think if she'd been left where she was it would have probably killed her. Hopefully, fingers crossed, this is the start of her being happy and healthy.

When you first let her go outside, make sure she is hungry when she goes.
She'll come back for food, and the sooner the better because you will be worried.

Mine gets Dreamies only when I call him back in from the garden. Well, I say call, I just shake the packet and he races up the lawn at speed!

Hope she’s ok - she may be a little spaced out when you get her home. After a GA, mine would just sit and stare blankly at a fixed spot ahead, the lights were on but he definitely wasn’t home!

KirstenBlest · 06/04/2023 11:42

Mine too. They're not Dreamies, they're from Wilko but DKitten doesn't know that.

Allergictoironing · 06/04/2023 18:31

Very lucky escape that OP. You didn't just rescue her from a bad life, you've literally saved her life!

Carouselfish · 06/04/2023 19:17

Back and she's in hiding while I cook her turkey mince. Have put her bed at floor level so she doesnt have to jump for anything and barricaded the high places she likes. Vet nurse said she was best behaved of the day and friendly! So fingers xd she likes me in the end!
(Bloody love Wilko for seeds and garden bits.)

Breakthrough! Purring, being stroked and playing gently with her paws on my hands. She climbed on the sofa and half sat on me for stroking to continue. Interestingly this is a week after the feliway has run out...She's come on so well! Soon be going out!
Having lovely real meat for her evening meal following cat food for breakfast and she's so brave she now follows me when she knows it's feeding time.
Yay! Rewarding or what?!

I'm not being chintzy here @Carouselfish but all this good advice and no sign of the Cat Tax being paid ......

I'm surprised you;ve got this far without your Final Demand

She’s done really well to survive pyometra, it makes me so cross when people don’t neuter their animals.

Florissant · 23/04/2023 10:27

I would say "huzzah" and "well done" for getting your little cat sorted in the best years of her new life but without the cat tax being paid...

catandcoffee · 23/04/2023 22:41

Great update OP.
Any chance of a picture of your little beauty.

Carouselfish · 14/06/2023 23:57

Hi! Update! She is now an out and about, fully vaxed, spayed, healthy, friendly miaowser. She has had the dogs about two feet away, them under my arms, both looking at her and wagging and she just lay on the floor, going, 'And...?'. She has the same attitude when the children come in to stroke her. Fine with it all. Only barrier left to cross before winter comes is her coming into the rest of the downstairs. She currently has three rooms but the other rooms downstairs are warmer/don't have to put on separate heater just to heat her room!
Photo eh... hang on!

Very cruel me just took this photo of her all sleepy. Reminds me of the Winnie and Wilbur books where she can see Wilbur when his eyes are open, but otherwise...

Also, she's racked up quite the death tally. No birds tg!! But would be nice if she would distinguish between rodents we don't like and rodents we do...Ha!

CreamyFucker · 15/06/2023 00:20

She's gorgeous. Keep going slowly with the dog introductions. Dogs can tend to get a little over excited and want to rush up to the cat whereas cats like to take their time and sniff from a distance. Perhaps put dogs on leads and give the dogs and cat some treats so they can all be in the vicinity of each other but the dogs can't rush up to her.

Clarich007 · 15/06/2023 08:50

That's such a lovely update OP.
So pleased for you and your girl. Glad she's happy and healthy now💐
