Just found dcat has broken canine tooth

Didn't renew pet insurance due to cost of living/partner being made redundant.

Have had pets for years, always insured, but never needed - until now.

Noticed cat has been eating more slowly for a couple of weeks, but only noticed over half of her canine missing when she yawned today. She doesn't seem to be in any pain.

Has anyone heard of this before?

Our girl has it, I didn’t even know the vet told me. No action was needed.

The vet says it’s easy to break them.

FionnulaTheCooler · 05/03/2023 19:43

My cat has had a broken one since we adopted her age 4, the vet points it out at every checkup. It doesn't seem to bother her given the speed she can wolf down a bowl of Whiskas.

One of ours is missing a canine! We adopted him when he was 2 and he didn't have it then. It has never been a problem for him.

well, most insurance policies don't cover dental work, so not being insured makes very little difference

I had to have about 7 teeth removed from my cat recently, and it cost around £600. However, she needed special care due to a heart defect.

One tooth from a healthy cat will hopefully be a lot less. If it is hurting her, she will likely need it removed

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 05/03/2023 19:47

My girl had to have one extracted because it was loose and there was a risk of an abscess. Cost £270 for this including descaling of teeth. She clearly missed the tooth and was annoyed about losing it.

Nimbostratus100 · 05/03/2023 19:48

O, I just reread, and you said she was in no pain.

Ours wasn't in pain either, but it was decay, not breaks, so it would have become painful eventually, so we went ahead with the op.

Just broken, the nerves may well have healed already.

A vet can have a look and advice better

Most don't cover dental work due to decay, but I think they will cover tooth issues caused by trauma - like a broken tooth. Certainly we found that to be the case with Direct Line.

ours was decay, so maybe that is why it wasn't covered.

Is she outdoor? I would be concerned something had hit her? Is everything else OK?

How long does a policy take to become fully "active?"

Heronatemygoldfish · 06/03/2023 11:39

My 12(ish) yo tortie has a chipped canine. She is also (after a major dental) missing the other three - the vet commented that it was ironic that the only one not needing extracting was the chipped one. It looks so funny when she yawns.

In the three weeks after the dental she caught several rats. And she still crunches her dry food happily. (We feed 50:50)

So if I were you, I wouldn't be bothered about your cat having a bit missing off one tooth!

Anonaymoose · 06/03/2023 11:44

You need to get it checked. If the pulp is exposed it will be very painful. If its just the tip and the nerve is unaffected it might be possible to leave it but ideally a broken tooth should be removed, if not there's a risk of infection /abscess, not to mention the pain!

I am thoroughly disappointed in this thread. All these stories of funny toofed cats and not one single (adorable) photo of them. You folks are slacking! Harrumph! 🤨

Sybil is happy to show off her broken canine (that doesn't seem to bother her at all)

Imagine a furry black ball, that's my 1 fang cat. He lost 3 of them in rapid succession over a 3-5 week period, neck lesions, about 5 years ago.

Internetwanderer · 06/03/2023 20:30

Our last cat did this, no idea how. We did take him to the vet and were told the best option was to have it removed...less risk of other problems stemming from it over time.
This was quite a while back...maybe around 2014, total cost was around £350.
Didn't affect him at all, if you are worried about eating (he could pretty much inhale tuna, so would never have starved!).

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 06/03/2023 21:12

Boycat snapped his fang when he was 5 months old.
He was jumping from the top of the wardrobe towards the chest of drawers.
Slight whimpering as he landed and I saw fang was snapped.
Trip to vets the following day, she assessed as not causing pain due to no pulp exposed but that he had bit his lip on impact to which she recommended bonjela for that.

It doesn't affect him with eating at all as he refuses all wet food and will only eat dry and food that he can steal off plates.
I think the stolen food probably tastes better but that's nothing to do with his tooth.
