On Saturday our cat got into a tousle with an un neutered cat. All seemed OK. No obvious sign of injury and cat was fine.
Yesterday he didn't have much of an appetite and slept a lot.
Though he's still eating. Just not as much. He's normally a very greedy cat.
Not much change in him today but he has now put away some fresh chicken.
After tea he was stood up on his little seat he likes and I noticed a brown goo down his tail and on his back. I wiped with a warm cloth and it came away red and brown and gooey. I think there is also a puncture wound (he's got thick black fur so it's hard to tell)

Called the vets and they will see him at 8 tomorrow. I'm taking it as a positive that he's not wanting to see him tonight.....

Please tell me my baby is going to be OK?

It's completely normal for you to worry about you beautiful cat, just keep him in a calm environment, make sure he's drinking. Don't worry too much about the food. Vets will spot the problem quickly and treat him. He will bounce back . Sending hugs OP Flowers

Does the goo smell bad? Could be an abscess, if so a course of antibiotics and should be fine. Often happens after a cat fight.

It does. DS picked him up and I think it is an abscess and that would be the moment it popped. Stinking goo all over his pyjama top, at first he thought the cat had diarrhea-ed on him.

If it's an abscess

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 27/02/2023 19:46

Sorry - definitely sounds like an abscess then. Vet tomorrow for antibiotics, however if it's advanced and needs to be cleaned out it might end up being expensive.

Callistamon62 · 27/02/2023 19:48

Defo sounds like abscess. If you can see the wound bathe with salt water, cotton wool.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 27/02/2023 19:51

If this happens again take him at the first sign of infection.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 27/02/2023 19:53

We've been bathing it with cotton wool when we've seen it but the pus flow seems to have slowed down.
Hes drinking and peeing OK.
Thank god he's insured.

When my cats have had abscesses the vet cost has always been less than the excess. It’s quite common in cats. Try not to worry.

Newuser82 · 27/02/2023 20:11

Yeah sounds like an abscess. Usually very easy to treat. Hope he recovers quickly!

I remember my vet telling me bites on the back half means my cat was a wuss and running away 🤣🤣

Antibiotics and your cat will be fine.

Be glad it's on their back, I own the neighbourhood thug and his wounds are always on his face. He doesn't understand fear - except of the hairdryer.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/02/2023 09:34

He'll be fine. My cat had abscess on her face and a punctured eyeball. And she was fine.

OrlandointheWilderness · 28/02/2023 09:39

Very common in cats. He'll be fine, and it is good that it has popped.

Clarich007 · 28/02/2023 09:45

Another one here who is used to treating abscesses. My stray cat was 2 before we rescued him and had him neutered. He's had a few abscesses over the last few years. It's a definate pattern, off his food, a bit listless, a sudden bald patch appearing and then it pops. As soon as the pressure is released he perks up. I bathe in warm salt water until I can get him to the vets. Try to use plenty of pads though, and only wipe once before changing it. The last one I dealt with at home, after sending the vet a photo. He was happy for me to treat it

I had the dominant cat too. The other cats needed to carry parcel tape, he hated parcel tape.

Mine had an ear infection recently due to a bite/scratch from his brother at first it was fine then it puffed up I took him in he had antibiotics (which gave him a runny butt so be prepared kaolin paste can be bought off amazon) he now has a notched ear but he is fine I learned that any scratch should be treated immediately I've got hibiscrub and some stuff that comes in a purple bottle from the pet store which was useful when his brother bit him again the other day (they are on a diet and squabbling over food) he didn't need antibiotics for that one

Worth a try, but can't see it catching on..

He'll be fine! I also live with a hooligan cat and even though last week he damaged himself fighting another cat (we think by landing on a rusty nail and getting caught, ripped open his chest in two places) he was still trying to get out and have another go when he saw his foe in the back garden. Despite the cat flap being locked and having a buster collar on!! 😾 Once he has finished his antibiotics and wound cream no doubt he will resume his aggro antics.

Tidsleytiddy · 28/02/2023 13:08

My lovely boy had an abscess caused by fighting we believe. It was missed by the vet we took him to and it burst the following night. Emergency vet came and he had to be operated on. Had to wear the cone of shame and stay indoors for six weeks (which he hated with a passion)plus antibiotics but he’s all fine now.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/02/2023 13:43

My cat is a dopey Indoor Persian and she still gets into trouble!
