Attacking cat - just playing/attention seeking?

We adopted a lovely cat (Jess) a couple of years ago when the previous owner could no longer keep her (due to her older cat not getting on with Jess). Jess was nearly a year old when we adopted her.

She was obviously nervous at first but soon settled in. She’s very lovely and affectionate (I mainly WFH and she follows me to the loo, tries to sit on the laptop while I’m working, gate crashes Teams meetings etc). As soon as my partner and I wake up in the morning and she can hear us, she ‘knocks’ on the door (more of a scratch really) to come in, jumps in the bed and purrs so loudly, she’s adorable and so affectionate but she has one really annoying habit. She ‘attacks’ me.

I can be walking through the house and she’ll pounce on me. If I’m standing still she will sometimes jump up at my hand. It really makes me jump and she doesn’t do it to anyone else (DP or the 3DCs) only me.

Has anyone got any ideas why she does this? I’ve had cats for most of my life and have never encountered this before.

She sees you as a playmate.

Ahh so it is just a playful thing.

I mean she doesn’t hurt me but it really makes me jump.

Maybe that’s why she only does it to me - as DP and DCs are out all day whereas I only do one day a week in the office.

My cat likes the occasional game of pouncings. He will be in attack mode, wiggle his bum and run at me and try to slap my legs as he runs past. No claws just soft paws.

She wants to play with you.

Could she be a Bengal or part Bengal? They need lots of stimulation and stay savage playful as adults.

AlisonDonut · 24/02/2023 20:37

Yes you have to read them and when they want to play they need some stuff waggled about for 10 mins to wear them out a bit.

No, not a bengal - she’s a tabby

Need to get the dangly fish on a stick toy out a bit more I think.
