Transferring ownership and microchip details

The previous owner has passed on the paper work for our cat and sent me a link to transfer ownership on Petlog.

However, she doesn't have a Petlog account herself, so the microchip details are not on their database. It is something the vet had told her to tell me when transferring ownership details.

I've just been on the phone to her and she will call the vet on Monday for clarification.

What do I need to do as the new owner? At some point, I will need to contact the vet to update her vaccines anyway, but would like to sort out the microchip details asap.

Thank you.

There are two microchip providers I think. If it's not pet log then try the other. Failing that get her chipped again.

Does the previous owner not know the microchip details then? Who microchipped the cat? The details of it must be in the previous owner's name. If you go on the 'checkachip' website you can type in the microchip number and it will tell you which microchip database (there are many) the chip's details will be on. Then you need to contact them and they will tell you the procedure - it may well involve the previous owner having to advise them.

If you don't have the microchip number your vets will let you pop in for their nurse there to do a quick scan and write down the number for you.

MIL didn't have any Internet access so definitely didn't have a Petlog account but after she died I managed to get her cat's chip transferred to me using the microchip number provided by the vet, once I'd paid Petlog the £15 transfer fee. I needed to know the cat's dob and colour as well I think.

Thanks both for replies.

@mrsrobin The previous owner has passed on her microchip number to me, and it was a rescue cat from the RSPCA. I have the adoption form with her microchip number on. I asked her whether she had a Petlog account, and she said she didn't, so not sure whether she was ever registered on a microchip site.

I will go to the checkachip site. Thanks.

Sadly there are flipping loads of microchip databases and new ones popping up all the time.
Pet log has a great feature where you can put in the microchip number and it will tell you which database the chip is held on. Petlog, Pet trac and indentichip are the easiest to deal with.
If it is smart trac I wish you much luck.
What you should make sure is that the chip is change to your details ( they will charge for this) and then make sure that the database is Defra/APHA compliant.

Okay, that's helpful. I think I'll wait and see what my friend says before I commit to anything.

I found petlog to be very unhelpful, plus you need to reset your password every time you log in to their site

The only reason it won't be on checkachip is if it is a foreign chip. All chips are updated as 'implanted' on a database when they are used for an animal - and the owner (or future owner if a kitten) are given the details and asked to follow the procedure to put their personal details on there if the implanter (vets or breeder etc) doesn't do it for them.

I've just checked on checkachip and it says she's registered on chipworks. I've just sent them an email, so will wait for their response.

Thanks again.

Chipworks? Never heard of them but a PP said there are lots of new ones. Well hopefully you can get it sorted now!

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/02/2023 20:00

Chip-works is the Pet-if database been around since 2018. Gives European wide registration - one of the good ones.
