Where to put cat when flea treating carpets?

We need to flea spray our carpets, which we only have in the hallways and stairs. Our house is relatively open plan and I don't want to lock the cat out of the house completely.

If we locked her in one of the upstairs rooms with the window ajar and put towels at the bottom of the door, would that be ok? The carpet being sprayed would be right outside. I'm really worried about her breathing it in.

Otherwise I suppose we could all go and sit in the garden for a bit together. It's not so easy to air out the hallway and stairs after the flea treatment so I wouldn't really want to let the cat back in straight away before it's all been aired.

When we did our stairs we let the cat outside and opened all the windows up and downstairs to create a through draught for between one and two hours (depending on the breeze). By the time the smell had gone the cat was ready to come back in (from happily exploring) and nap on the bed.

We bought a house, found it to be totally flea-infested, and had to have the entire house fumigated. We put our (indoor) cats in their carriers in our van. The process took about 6 hours.

Your plan sounds sensible, can the window be locked on a latch setting? They will jump out of windows unfortunately.

thanks @FormerlyPathologicallyHappy glad you think so - we can put the window on the latch. Do hope that will be enough though.

@CanadianJohn we're central-ish London so no car sadly

@Pixiedust1234 the silly sausage only goes out for twenty minutes twice a day, if we locked her out for hours she'd be really upset

Well...that screws the plan up then 😂

I would do as other pp suggested. Put her in one room with food/treats and litter tray, and put window on latch. Spray stairs, then open rest of windows top and bottom to air out. It might only take 30 mins depending on how good the air flow is.

Just a reminder to spray in crevices and edges more than the actual carpet as that's where the little beggars hide.
