Cat weeing in the house

Hi, does anyone have any suggestions please as I am becoming obsessed with this he smell of cat wee

We acquired my grandmas cat 2 years ago when my grandma died, cat was a rescue prior to my gran having her so is estimated to be around 12-15 years.

Cat has a litter tray and uses it but then will just wee when and where she feels like too and I will walk into a room and it stinks then I have to try and track down where she has weed and clean it up and try and get rid of the smell

our other cat doesn’t use a litter tray as she does outside. Grans cat won’t go outside unless it’s absolutely boiling and she will venture about 2ft to the patio furniture.

the doors are open all the time, she has a cat flap, litter tray. I have used the stuff which is supposed to get rid of the smell so they don’t wee there again, I have changed litter types, I have used one of those plug in things, changed her diet, moved her food etc

i don’t know what else to do but it’s becoming horrendous, tonight she has weed under a 6ft fish tank so I can’t move it but the tiny gap between the floor and tank cabinet has wee now under it. I have spent ages sliding bits of tissue under the cabinet to try and soak it up !

I feel sorry for the cat but really wish she would stop weeing wherever the hell she likes when I can see no reason for it !

she has been vet checked too

have you got trays up stairs and down stairs i think when they get older they have trouble holding it in .I would put one in every bathroom

Thanks Rosey she doesn’t go upstairs though (she could if she wanted to), there’s nothing stopping her

i have put her litter tray now near where she weed yesterday. Which is also near her food. Vet said previously they don’t like to wee near their food

Has anyone had any success with any other plug ins, herbal remedies etc ? Am willing to try anything but don’t know what her problem is

First of all she needs to see a vet to rule out kidney or bladder issues, or a UTI.

If she's physically healthy then I would go for multiple litter trays as well as different types of litter - you could also try different types of litter tray.

Does she get on ok with the other cat? It can be a sign of stress. She might be better in a home with no other cats which I know doesn't really help that much

I’d put her on Cystease capsules. I know you said you’d tried different litters but was ultra clumping one of them?

Bigger trays can help too.

Coffee she walks past an open door or past her litter tray to go and wee up a plant pot instead though. She does use the litter tray when she feels like it, so wouldn’t those actions in themselves rule out medical issues ?

HoHoHo* her and the other cat just keep out of each others way really. She has always seemed like a cat who lived on the edge of her nerves, always on guard and worried looking, even before she lived with my Grandma. My Uncle thinks she was abused in a previous home before she was in recur maybe.

FormerlyPathologically she has a REALLY large litter tray 😆 and the litter does clump. We have tried various types and the current one seems to be her preferred option (when she does use it)!

maybe I should just get more trays then too and I will look up the capsules thank you

Ultra clumping might be a key factor, it’s got smaller granules that are gentle on sensitive paws.

My Bengal male insisted on ultra clumping, talcum powder scented, ankle deep. Anything else and he’d wee on the cooker splashback.

Moggy girl uses wood chip which he hated.

Do you have insurance for her? Our insurance paid for a cat behaviour expert to come and help us with our cat weeing in the house which helped a lot.

The other thing that helps is keeping her litter tray very clean. The clumping litter works best for that, we check it at least twice a day and completely clean it out once a week.

She will still wee in the house if we have builders in for any reason. So we generally put her in the cattery if any work is being done on the house.

It's massive pain in the bum. Our sofas all have waterproof blankets on them and our rugs are all washable. We close bedroom doors behind us and she's not allowed in my study at all.

Writing all this makes me wonder why we still have her....

The hormonal stuff didn't work for us. Vet prescribed anti depressants for her but we couldn't make her take them (we tried everything the vet/internet/friends/family/random work colleagues recommended)

So my advice is behavior expert if your insurance is willing to cover and meticulously clean litter trays (for one cat you should have two)

Good luck.
