Do cats scratch corduroy?

Weighing up buying a vintage sofa. But I've got several cats. Also considering velvet. They're not deliberate scratchers - well one has her moments - but claws often catch don't they? Anyone had any of these items?

And what sort of furniture do you cat lovers have?

Velvet sofa and the cats banned from the lounge now.

Depends on the cat, the fabric the corduroy is made from and I think probably the width of the cords. If it's a reasonably hard, close cord, then I can see most cats being VERY tempted as the texture must be quite close to that of the hessian or cardboard scratchers. If it's very soft, and very wide cord, you're probably OK.

Do cats scratch corduroy?

Do bears poo in the woods?
Is the Pope a Catholic?

I'm afraid so OP.

Cats are bastards, scratch what they like.

For what it’s worth our sofas are this kind of fabric here and the cats don’t scratch it. They do however scratch the rug and one likes to knead the fleece throws and electric blanket so they look lovely now.

Spray some citrus oil on it and it discourages them because they don't like the smell.

Or could you protect the most scrtachable corners with plastic covers?

Thanks for these.

I got leather thinking they wouldn’t scratch it. It is the only think they do scratch 😂

We have a velvet sofa and the cats never touch it. We have a chenille type one too. They dont touch that either. A corduroy-ish arm chair does get clawed.

Yeah, I had a nice leather sofa until I got the cats. Little furry wasters...

Ref the original question. they're cats, there's a fair chance they will scratch because that's what they do. I think I'd scratch a corduroy sofa tbh 😉

It’s a good we’d rather be cat on a scruffy sofa with a cat than alone on an immaculate one.

I used to have a chenille one and my calico ripped the side out of it.

It so depends on the cat, surely. The occasional claw caught in fabric is pretty different from a campaign of destruction (yes, Leo RIP, I am thinking of you.)

I guess then you'll have to take the risk with whatever you choose 😂I think this thread has proved that...but if you Google velvet sofas and cats they are recommended( the sofas not cats 😆...though I recommend cats)

The scratch fucking everything in my experience or stand on top of it and knead it.

ChinoiserieNerd · 14/02/2023 16:58

We have a good quality velvet sofa (Martindale 100,000) and it still looks perfect despite two very lively kittens. They know to use cardboard cat furniture to sharpen their claws but love to play fight on the sofa and claw into the fabric every day - no damage at all!

I've had cotton canvas and leather sofas with previous cats which all got ruined and would always buy velvet now.
