Do cats have to sleep high up?

Hi everyone,

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but we were adopted by a cat about six years ago, when we are very much a dog household (we have four!). She sleeps in a room that they are not allowed to use and comes and goes via a window. I have a dolls house in that room I had bought with a view to doing up and she has been sleeping in her bed on top of it. I haven't done a thing with it in six years and I would dearly love to sell it and have more room but would she be upset if she was no longer sleeping up high? I have bought her a cat bed that is on legs so she is off the floor by about a foot and a half but I genuinely do not know if I am being cruel. New bed has not arrived yet!

"..................................or with a buddy for security.................."

I am our cats' go-to buddy when they need security as they sleep.
There's generally no room in our bed for me and DH when our "buddies" join us.

Okay, my cat likes to sleep in the garden when it's warm. Under a bush or in the jasmine.

But he has to be off the ground and high during the colder months. So his bed, like mine is, is raised off the floor.

Does anyone know what happens to all the cat beds that are never used?

Mymblesdaughter · 14/02/2023 20:31

Jackson Galaxy recommends a high bed or area for your cat if you have dogs. It's a place they can get away and feel safe. So I'd just set them up another high bed or shelf.

One of mine sleeps all day under the radiator, I had the temerity to wash the blanket fold it nicely and put it back under the radiator, he moved out of that room in disgust. So I've picked up the blanket unfolded it and thrown it on the floor and immediately he's back snuggled up in his favourite spot. Whatever you think your cat might want they will soon put you right. 😬

@TheShellBeach - he is er, well cushioned.

Your cats look very happy.

Well-cushioned?
Emerald is the most well-cushioned cat I've ever known. She weighs 6.5 kg and has failed to lose weight, even with Cat Slimming World at the vet's and the most expensive obesity management cat foods

holierthanthou73 · 14/02/2023 21:12

Mine like to mix it up on a daily basis, a bit like their food preference. 😀

CambsAlways · 14/02/2023 21:13

My cats sleep wherever they want low high doesn’t matter where

LexMitior · 14/02/2023 21:16

@TheShellBeach - I assume your house has an overall cat weight allowance which means Emerald has a much skinnier fellow feline; thus it evens out

That's a good way of looking at it!

LadyJ2023 · 14/02/2023 21:21

Yes cats do like to sleep high up as it's where they naturally feel safest while sleeping and relaxing.

OP - send the cat bed back and get a refund. I bet 100% that your cat will not use it.

Absolutely do NOT do this! Your cat will love the box it comes in 😁

Or do what mine did when we brought him a new bed. Laid outside it with one arm and paw inside it 😼

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/02/2023 23:09

Ours spends the winter wedged firmly between the bottom of the radiator and the floor. Each cat to their own.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/02/2023 23:10

This is the only answer @krustykittens
I’ve been a life long cat slave and had cats that sleep anywhere from under the floorboards, to on the roof, and even the top of a telegraph pole and all places in between. The telegraph pole did require outside assistance in retrieving her.

Surely Eleanor Farjeon can spell "drawer".

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 14/02/2023 23:19

@TheShellBeach Australian - maybe drawers only draw there, being as they are upside down ?! Or artistic/poetic license 🤣

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 14/02/2023 23:23

Our cat is weird and almost always sleeps in her own bed. In the day it’s next to the living room radiator, then at our bedtime cat and bed are popped on the kitchen table - otherwise she is in our bed at 4am. I bought a new bed for her at Christmas because her other one had gone lumpy, and she was in it the minute it was out of the packaging.

We don’t have dogs, and in summer she would prefer to sleep outside in a bush (but not allowed to do that overnight!).

LOL Or someone who can't spell transcribed it like that.

TheShellBeach · 14/02/2023 23:43

@Judystilldreamsofhorses Wow - your cat looks like my cat.
