Cat constantly in litter tray (please help)

Hi everyone,
I hope everyone is well.
I am currently fretting like crazy over my beautiful girl cat.
My girl is five and I have owned her since the beginning of December 2022 (my girl had previously been in a rescue for around six weeks).
Today my lovely girl has been at the litter tray multiple times: 9/10 times she hasn’t done anything (wee or poo) in there. She kicks the litter as if to cover the waste but there isn’t anything for her to cover.
I live alone and lost my previous cat in September. I am anxious and so scared of something happening again.
My girl has an appointment with the vet on Wednesday. (The vet will be coming to the house.)
My girl hasn’t been outside at all. I received a record of her vaccinations from the rescue centre in December.
Family members think that my girl might have worms. Her tummy is quite big.
I am still so inexperienced with cat ownership, and losing my previous cat (he went missing without trace) has knocked my confidence as a cat owner.
Thank you so much for any help. xx

Sounds like she could have cystitis.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/02/2023 20:32

Ring the vet. Explain what she is doing. If she has a blocked urethra she will need to be seen urgently.

My DCat had this, he did a wee in the bath after I’d picked him up from the Cattery and I had a feeling he wasn’t behaving like himself.

I rang the vet and said he’s done a wee in the bath and looks funny. He’s just been in the Cattery and she told me to drive to the vets immediately to get him checked.

Sounds like a uti its an emergency and she needs to be seen ASAP

RedCarsGoFaster · 11/02/2023 20:33

Sounds like a UTI, but if she's not actually peeing at all it could be a blockage.

Trip to the OOH vet by the sounds of it. We did that twice with my girl for emergency pain relief injections and antibiotics.

smooththecat · 11/02/2023 20:37

If she isn’t weeing at all it’s an emergency and you need to go asap, I’d go to a local animal hospital if that’s the case, but it sounds like she has done some wee? If so, that’s really good. Cats are prone to urinary issues and stress can be a factor.

Definitely sounds like cystitis, she needs the vet today not on Wednesday! Vets now have an online video service you can access fairly quickly first, which I've found very helpful in the past, but judging by when my fluffy one has had it it's extremely uncomfortable and needs relieving as soon as possible.

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate all of the advice, and @hilariousnamehere that link is great.
I have been on the phone to the emergency vet and my girl is going in first thing today (Sunday) (the Wednesday appointment was unrelated).
Thank you again x

That's good news and I hope both kitty and you are ok! They do keep us on our toes don't they?

I am so glad uou are taking her to the vet sooner than Wednesday.
My boy cat was ( and still is to a lesser extent ) having bladder problems, he could not pee but because he has a enclosed litter tray I did not realise he was not peeing .
Like your dcat he went dozens of times in one day so I took him to the vet , he had to be sedated and a catheter inserted and put on a drip

He has had to have this twice now and the second time it was touch and go if he would pull through because his metabolism was slow he could not process the gen ans . It took him hours to come round and there was a worry of brain damage. Thankfully he recovered but now I have to keep a v close eye on him .

Watch for your dcat sitting oddly while trying to pee, very straight back, head tilted back / chin up .
It may not be a sign / look that your cat gives but I now recognise it with my cat instantly and get into the vet straight away.

SantaBakula · 12/02/2023 02:21

This is a link to my Dcat story as I mentioned above ( posted under a different name ) hopfully it will give @JennyOndioline some idea of what to expect .
My cat is not out of the woods yet , though he has been doing much better this past day he seems to be in a little discomfort so i may be taking him back to the vets soon :-(

I am so sorry for the late reply: thank you to everyone again for the advice!
My DCat has been seen by the vet and she has a water infection. The vet has given my girl cat medicine.
@SantaBakula - thank you, and I am thinking of you and your fur baby! Your love for your cat just shines through your posts.
xx
