Cleaning the floor where there’s a litter tray!

We have our litter tray in a room with laminate flooring in and I’m really struggling to get it properly clean. When I sweep/hoover, then mop with method floor cleaner, it dries fine but then if the cats or anyone else walks on it-even hours later, it leaves marks and footprints. I think it must be from a fine layer of clay stuff from the litter, that I’m just not managing to clean up properly. The cat is too fussy to change litter types (I’d rather have the wood pellets!) but I was wondering if there was a better floor cleaner to try?!

I know what you mean, it's really bloody annoying. I use flash all purpose on it then have a wipe round with a baby wipe in-between.

Shinyandnew1 · 11/02/2023 16:06

It is so annoying, isn’t it! Do you recommend the Flash??

I have tiles but have the same issue.

I wipe down with anti bacterial wipe first, then mop with hot water and flash floor cleaner and leave it to dry before I put anything back.

My tray in on a cat litter mat from Amazon. It doesn’t catch everything but it gets most of it.

Get a top opening/box style litter tray and catsan litter. No mess at all.

DRS1970 · 11/02/2023 16:21

I would recommend flash floor cleaner. We don't have any issues like you have described.

I have one of these. And my litter doesn't track much anyway. The mat I really helps.

Cat san tracked terribly when I used it. I use intersand and it doesn't track.

Get a mat to put under the litter tray.

Shinyandnew1 · 12/02/2023 09:55

Thanks for the replies-the actual litter itself doesn’t end up all over the place, so I’m not sure if a mat would do much, but it’s worth a try. Can anyone link to the type they like?

It’s more the chalk dust that must be in the air, settling on the floor, I think?! If I change the litter, the cat will probably not cope and go back to weeing in the hall which I can’t be doing with!

One of our cat trays is a lidded one , the FemaleCat scrapes the walls when she's used it ( our summons to clean it ) . The walls and the cat are coated with a light dust from the cat litter when she emerges .

I use Method or Dr Bronner soap on any hard floors .

Shinyandnew1 · 12/02/2023 10:35

This is just an example-not a great photo but these are marks from feet walking across the floor over 4 hours after it had been swept/mopped/cleaned with Method floor cleaner. The whole floor looks like this v quickly unless the room isn’t used!

I will try the Flash!

You're right I think, it's the type of litter - after you add litter to the tray, or the cat gets in and shifts it about, the dust rises up and then settles onto surfaces. I had the same issue with a clay type of litter too. I don't think it'll make any difference what floor cleaner you use.

I use wood pellet type stuff now and don't get the 'dust' issue, but you've said the cat won't tolerate that type of litter. I use the smaller type of wood fibre pellets which are kinder to the cats' feet, I don't know if he'd tolerate that? Cats Best Original.

I wonder if you could get your cat to accept wood pellets by a gradual process, OP? Start by just mixing one handful of pellets thoroughly into the clay litter.
Each week, slightly increase the proportion of pellets to clay, until you finally have just pellets. It might be the sudden change that upsets her.

Is Flash pet friendly? My friend's cat was seriously ill after getting floor cleaner on his paws. The floor had been wiped down but there was still enough left to affect him quite badly
