Do we need the vet

I came down this morning to about 5 loads of cat sick. She isn't being sick now but is sort of hiding under the bed and doesn't want to come out so I'm pretty sure she's not herself. Also 1 episode of vomiting on Wednesday but then was fine in herself after that. Do we need to go to the vet? Would you wait and see? I feel like I should take her but then I think I wouldn't rush my kids to the doctors if they were sick 5 times in one night and then felt unwell the next day. I'd just assume gastro bug. Help!

Yes.

If this is out of character then yes take her to the vets. Cats are notoriously good at hiding being unwell. I hope she’s okay and it’s nothing serious.

Swiftbushome · 11/02/2023 09:45

I just got her to eat a couple of cat treats which must mean she's not SO bad. I think I'll give the vet a ring rather than just rushing her in. We don't have money to burn

I would wait a few hours at least.

Swiftbushome · 11/02/2023 09:51

Yeah just spoke to the vet. They've booked her in for 5 today (normally weekends are emergency pricing but they said they'd do regular conuslt charge)
If she seems better before then probably just a gastro virus and we just call to cancel.

If they’re going to a normal
consult charge I would take her anyway. I know it costs but if she is unwell then you can get answers or start to get answers. Is she an indoor or both cat? Have you recently swapped her food? Was there anything obvious in the vomit?

Swiftbushome · 11/02/2023 12:47

She's come.out now and I've managed to get her to eat some tuna. I think I might be able to cancel. Will keep an eye on her though for the next couple of hours before we make a decision.

as you’ve got a normal priced appointment I’d still take her for a checkup

if she got bad again over weekend emergency appointments are £180 near me

Swiftbushome · 11/02/2023 13:56

Yeah I do see your point but she seems absolutely 100% fine now. She's been back off outside in the garden. Running after the other cat. Completely normal. I don't really see what the vet is going to do.

How old is she?

Swiftbushome · 11/02/2023 14:23

She's 3

If she goes outdoors she may have eaten something that she shouldn't have. Have you changed her food recently?

She may be a bit dehydrated from vomiting. I would probably take her to the vet anyway if you can.

Emmamoo89 · 11/02/2023 14:30

Still take her to the vets

torthecatlady · 11/02/2023 14:31

Side note, one of our cats has always been very "sicky", we swapped to sensitive biscuits and feeding half a pouch at a time and that definitely improved things.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 11/02/2023 15:17

I wouldn't take a young, otherwise healthy cat to the vets for a one-off episode of vomiting and no other symptoms, especially if they're still eating, playing and drinking.

If there was diarrhoea or they weren't eating then that's a bit different. All my cats have had sickness and days where they feel rubbish and they've always been fine the next day.

The vet won't do much if she's eating, drinking and toileting - ours wouldn't even see them for a one-off vomit session!

Swiftbushome · 11/02/2023 15:58

Yeah I rang back talked it through with the vetinary nurse and she agreed she thought we were right to cancel. She honestly does seem OK now. She had serious issues with her stomach when she was a kitten which is what made me more cautious but I think it does seem like a cat version of a 24 hour bug. The vets are a 24 hour one so I can take her in any time (for a fee!) If she did go downhill

I think it was the right approach for a young cat

hope she's feeling better and you have a less stressful rest of the weekend
