Help re breading a Persian kitten

Hi all,

I have a beautiful 18 month old Persian girl who is in season and seems desperate to mate. I am considering finding a male (she's an indoor cat) and possibly breeding kittens.

Now, I know I'd need to consider things such as having no plans (holidays etc) roughly 9 weeks after she falls pregnant, but I have some questions re the following:

  • I am a teacher. Is it possible to still go to work and stuff when the kittens are born in those first 8 weeks?
  • I live in a 2 bed flat, how would it work? Would the mum and the kittens get shut in a room together to contain them, or a crate etc? I have two female cats so would I need to keep my neutered one away from the mummy and her babies?

Basically I'm a bit clueless (and won't do anything until I'm knowledgable!) but Google isn't actually very helpful..

I’ve attached an instructional diagram.

But seriously-

I have pedigree cats. I was waiting over twelve months for each kitten as the breeder had such a waiting list.

I wouldn’t touch a “breeder” who had never bred before, didn’t own both parents, and didn’t have full health checks.

Additionally, any good breeder I’ve ever met will not let their kittens go until after they’re neutered. I’m surprised that your cat wasn’t spayed before you got here. Therefore, I’m thinking you didn’t get her from a quality breeder and so you don’t know what problems you could be breeding into a generation of kittens.

Shame on you breeding when rescues are full of unwanted cats and kittens. You're an absolute disgrace 😡

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2023 21:30

My two ex breeding queens ran up bills of £22k.

gamerchick · 05/02/2023 21:34

Are they those squashed face jobs?

Just get her neutered. I'm thinking this is a wind up though.

A teacher, really? "I am a teacher. Is it possible to still go to work and stuff"

And planning to "bread" your cat?

I don't think so!

Soubriquet · 05/02/2023 21:55

If you are serious about breeding her, you need to wait until her next season.

Between now and then, you need to do tests on your cat to ensure she isn’t carrying anything that could be passed down to kittens.

You need to find a stud, who has also had the same tests.

You also need to put some feelers out about who would purchase a purebred Persian. They aren’t cheap moggies and people are cutting back on purchases like this.

Are you able to take care of the kittens long term if they don’t find a home?

Are you able to afford an emergency c-section if she requires it?

Are you prepared to bottle feed and hand raise kittens if for any reason mum is unwell or unable?

If you can’t confidently answer these questions, then breeding is not for you and she will be better off being spayed.

What are your reasons for wanting to breed from her?

Money? Or ‘she seems desperate to mate’

Please get your cat neutered.

EmmaC78 · 05/02/2023 21:59

Honestly please just spay her. Even pedigree cats are ending up in rescues these days, there is no need for random breeding which just makes the issues worse.

I don’t think not owning both parents is a bad sign. Especially for smaller breeders- finding a top quality stud is preferable to buying a male that may not have the proven quality genetics- plus you then have to do all the health testing etc yourself. Easier to use a known stud with a history of healthy offspring.

as for o/p, well she does admit to being clueless…

Breading a cat is like breading anything else, wrap it in dough and pop in the oven, like Tom Kitten.
Can't believe you are a teacher.
Better still get the cat neutered.

@gamerchick Cheddar and Magic are highly offended at their breed being referred to as 'those squashed face jobs'
