What wet food?

Currently feed my kittens (10months old so nearly on adult food now) felix kitten in gravy. They are a bit fussy so dont like jelly, and dont like fishy flavours. But they seem to be going off this a bit, seeming a bit disinterested when first down, and then eating when they realise nothing better is coming!

So looking at other options for them and thinking about getting IAMs wet, chicken in gravy. Does anyone use this and is it good? Want something good for them but needs to not break the bank as with two of them, it gets expensive!

Should add they also have applaws dry food, and eat two sachets a day (each) of wet food atm.

Haha it looks like you have a two headed kitten!

I think the best advice is to by the best quality food you can afford. Look for as high meat content as possible. My DCat has Katkin which is great, but is quite expensive. Zooplus have a good range such as Bozita. I've heard the Butchers Classic is very good value and has a high meat content.

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 31/01/2023 19:52

My cat has Butcher's Classic. It took him a day or so to warm up to it, but he loves it now. It's very affordable and has a higher meat content then several other brands.

Have had cats my whole life (am 50) and can tell you they're fussy little buggers and if you think you find a food they love, they'll change their mind about 10 seconds after you think you've cracked it. Chop and change seems to have served me well!

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 01/02/2023 07:27

Honestly - it depends on what your cats will eat.

I always laugh when I see posters recommending all these fancy high quality, expensive cat foods - my cats turned their noses up at every single one Grin

I would maybe ask for some samples from various companies in your budget and see what they'll tolerate.

Masterofcats · 01/02/2023 20:20

Yep be careful with high end expensive foods. My little darling turned his nose up at something expensive ( can't remember the name) and promptly went next door and stole poor next doors cats whiskers.
I go for a high quality dry food and half a sachet of Sheba morning and evening now. Seems to keep sir happy and away from stealing.
I'm sure this isn't the best food so I will be watching this thread for ideas to try. But seriously cats have strong opinions on food at times.
Mine would actually rather eat tuna and freshly cooked chicken. He will also happily beg and steal food. He never misses a neighbourhood BBQ. 😫

I was really shocked at the meat content in Felix and Wiskas, there’s hardly any it’s all filler and grains, which is really not what cats were made to eat. My vet mentioned it when I took my kitten for her health check, so I had a look for alternatives.

The higher the meat content the better, and ideally grain free.

I tried blink - she hated it. She tolerates Lily’s Kitchen but she LOVES Meowing Heads. It’s something like 93 percent meat and not that expensive on Amazon, pets at home sometimes have it on offer too.

45Degrees · 02/02/2023 07:14

Mine has been eating Butchers Classic Cat for over a year now. He seems to love it.

We bought it to try as it is affordable, and contains no sugar. So many cat foods contain sugar or caramel!
Luckily he likes it.

Reluctantadult · 02/02/2023 07:21

As the owner of a now diabetic cat, go for high meat content and low carbs. Sheba is the best I could find. When I started looking at cat foods most of them are terrible! I wish I had known this.

RosesAndHellebores · 04/02/2023 22:18

Oh my darling boy liked most things that were £1for a tiny tin but only if he could have a different brand/flavour every day. He had half a can or sachet morning and evening and Hills Science alongside it.

TheBalletCats · 05/02/2023 14:29

I’d to start my 2 on Whiskas kitten food as they’d been weaned onto the very cheapest adult food but transitioned them to high meat content food as soon as vet okayed it because obligate carnivores should be eating food that’s more than 4% meat 🤢 As @45Degrees says a worrying number of big brands contain sugar - my cat with renal issues ended up having to have teeth removed (despite a multiple-step dental hygiene routine from kittenhood) because his genetic propensity for dental issues couldn’t withstand sugary catfood. I felt dreadful for having just trusted food from the vet would be healthy. (He is now back on normal wet food with Pronefra added to it & renal-specific dry food.)

If yours likes tinned tuna I wonder if they’d go for Hi-Life tuna @Masterofcats - my two (who’ll be 11 in April) have the senior version of it & absolutely love it.

For you OP, ZooPlus sells trial packs to help with figuring out what your catlets might like. Cats, as you’ve find, all have their own views on tastes & textures so it might take some trial & error; but good quality food is a worthwhile investment.

Our cat turned his nose up at Whiskas, Felix and Lily's Kitchen, but loves Blink.

Yup! 100% this. I have 4 different types and I rotate. She’s now an old lady (rescue so precise age not known - prob about 15) so I’ll pander to her (extremely loud and persistent) whims.

VenturaMabel · 05/02/2023 22:53

Bozita, a Swedish high meat content food I saw recommended on here. Mine likes the Elk one

My 10 year old madam with the delicate digestion is now healthier, happier and friendlier than she's ever been. There's been an amazing transformation since she started having it.

lowclouds · 05/02/2023 22:54

Wainwrights was a good one for my picky cat.

We wanted to wean him off the junk food (whiskas, felix etc) and tried a few more expensive ones that he wouldn't eat.

He ate Wainwrights both wet and dry. You can get it at pets at home. It's not cheap but also doesn't break the bank.

Suzie0003 · 05/02/2023 23:00

My one year old cat has a pouch of cat food in jelly a day (whiskers or felix) along with dry food too. She always has fresh chicken or sardines each day alongside this though

keri17 · 05/02/2023 23:08

Not to be “that” person but I would suggest getting them off the Felix or anything Purina related.
there is a Facebook group with thousands of folks and experiences, and besides, Felix is shit when it comes to content.

our cat seems to be ok on Sainsbury’s own brand just now but I’d like to try some of these suggestions

LilLilLi · 06/02/2023 17:10

Agree with @keri17, anything but Felix and Whiskas isn’t great either.

Its pure junk food, cats are carnivores- 4% meat and meat “derivatives” then filled with cereal and other random shit just isn’t good enough and that’s before you get to the sugar content.

tillyandmilly · 06/02/2023 17:21

My 2 cats eat Gourmet wet pouches- they have 2 a day - think they are £2 for 8 sachets? with top ups of go cat crunchies throughout the day - their coats are silky soft!

kittielittie · 07/02/2023 20:58

My 14 week kitten was
weaned from mothers milk onto go cat biscuits and nothing else ☹️ I introduced felix kitten wet food and upgraded his biscuits to iams kitten. I'm now looking to upgrade his wet food but to something better for him and sustainable.
Would prefer pouches rather than cans and I can't stretch to katkins.
I'd like something easy to obtain. He has a small amount of 'human' food. He likes steak, salmon, sea bass and cooked egg. Turns his nose up at chicken and tuna. Any suggestions please for his main wet food?

Dontknownow86 · 07/02/2023 21:04

I feed my cats feringa that I order from zooplus or bitiba (whichever has offers) It's good meat content and quality but not one of the most expensive ones on there. My cats are lovely and healthy looking 😊
