Family cat - vaccine schedule / vaccine side effects

Hi

I took my parents cat to the vet today as I was concerned about his eyes and teeth. Anyway he's fine (eyes looked like third eyelid showing and she reckons probably viral) but booked in to get his teeth done. Whilst we were there I got him vaccinated (3 I think) and a worming treatment. He’ll get a booster jag when his teeth get done.

He's approx 6 years old, when we got him he was approx 18 months and came fully vaccinated wormed up to date etc. However my parents (and I’ll admit I never really knew and don't live with them) never got any boosters or anything, he is loved and adored and everyone feels very bad that he didn't get his boosters. He's free range with a large garden and cat flap so does go outside a lot. He's had a worm treatment every year ish and has attended the vet approximately once a year which is when he's had it.

The vet said with this jag today and the booster in 3 weeks that's him up to date but I can't remember if she said what the schedule after that is - is it a yearly booster after that? For the worming treatments is yearly okay too and with him getting it at the vet is that him or do we need to give him at home treatments too?

He's a bit lethargic and sleepy (but rousable ) after his ordeal today (he's not a fan of the cat carrier or car or being held) but the vet said to expect that, is there anything serious to watch for / when should he be back to his usual slightly more awake self?

Is there any long term effects from this lapse in his vaccinations. The vet was very lovely and reassuring and we are all glad he is okay.

Thanks

The vaccinations are yearly. In an older cat, if you aren't putting them in cattery, I think a lot of people give up - however cattery won't take them without the jabs.

Unfortunately if you don't keep up they start again from the beginning. Like you, I found this out the hard way.

However apart from objecting while they are done, I can't say I've noticed the cats having any side effects.

Worming is annoyingly frequent. If your cat is indoor you might get away with it but now I have hunters I need to keep up to date. Similarly I got away without flea treatments for years, but the crazy outdoor cat picked them up in no time, and even worse is allergic to them.

I use a monthly flea treatment that also treats some worms and then every 6 months I use a wormer that covers the worms that the monthly treatment doesn't.

They get annual vaccination boosters.

Annual vaccination, worming 6 monthly, flea treatment monthly.
There's a little leeway but if you approximately keep to that you keep many nasty preventables at bay.
One of my cats seems a bit zonked post vaccines the others don't seem at all bothered by it. Same cat I have to keep on time for flea treatment as she's allergic to flea bites and starts pulling her fur out in clumps.
