Cat suddenly very unwell - vet doesn’t know why

Came downstairs this morning to our 15 year old cat in his bed, rather than his usual yowling for food. He wouldn’t get up or even lift his head. No interest in food or anything.

Took him to vets when they opened, he’s still there now. They have run blood tests and can find nothing significant. He’s too weak to stand, won’t eat. He was absolutely fine yesterday :( They have no idea what on Earth is wrong, he’s on a drip and they are trying antibiotics and anti inflammatories. Apparently it “could be viral” but they have no idea what or even if it is that. His temperature is slightly raised and he has been bleeding from his nose.

Now they are saying he will need to go to overnight vets to stay on drip and I’m panicking how much this is all going to cost. He only has accident and injury insurance. Obviously I will find the money but when they don’t even know what’s wrong or if he will get better, it’s a tough call.

What on Earth could have suddenly made him ill like this??

Im so sorry OP. Ive been there deciding with a vet what the best thing to do is. Its very upsetting. Your job as a pet owner is to give them a great life and like humans, a peaceful death. Yours and your dogs' grief is a measure of your love and the impact he had on your life. You will smile in time with memories of him but, for now, you will understandably be upset at such a loss. You didnt have time to plan and prepare a goodbye but he didn't have months of sickness and suffering causing you the angst you've had over the last day or so, he lived well right until the end. Look after yourself and your dogs. You all need time to grieve and adjust x

So sorry to read this. He sounds like a right character. You absolutely did the best by him.

😿 I feel so sad for you as I remember that feeling. I felt guilty and I felt angry blaming the vets for not doing more to help. But after a couple of days I started to realise this wasn't helping .
I read a bit of a cheesy phrase but it really helped me " if love could have saved him, he would have lived forever". And I reminded myself how much I had loved and looked after my little friend in his short life. I hope that you will find comfort with the doggies and in time smile at all memories together . My cat passed in Dec so I ordered a calendar full of his pictures for 2022. And most days when I went to the kitchen I stroked his picture and said Hello. I think you can still buy these kind of calendars on funky pigeon website x

I see you mention he was an oriental breed - they are big characters, no wonder the house feels quiet.
15 is actually a very good age for many of the oriental breeds as some tend to have slightly shorter life spans than your average moggy. Unfortunately pedigree breeds are also harder, health wise to coax out of a crisis.
We lost our gorgeous short haired oriental boy to a combination of an infection and poor kidney function at only 5 years old which broke our hearts.
Couldn't live without another one though...we have 2 now.
You did your best for your cat and it's a tough decision to make but vets see this all the time unfortunately and generally know when it's in the best interest of the animal to pts. Big hugs.

Rest easy little one. At 15 he’d obviously had a fabulous life with his humans and his crazy dog family. He sounds quite a character. I’m about to make that call and my heart is in pieces.
