Kitten with diarrhoea

New kitten got very sick last weekend. Temperature, very sleepy and diarrhoea. He ended up needing a drip to replace fluids and antibiotics. He came home with antibiotics and probiotics and started getting better at the start of the week but has been left with periodic diarrhoea. He’s quite smelly. Anyone have any experience of how to help him get better. He’s super friendly but is also climbing all over everything so it’s pretty unhygienic.

Has a faecal sample been sent for testing? Giardia ruled out?
If so, I'd consider changing diet.

No testing. Guess will pursue that if it doesn’t clear up. Of course insurance not kicked in yet so we’ve had a very expensive weekend.

I'm not sure what your vet has suggested, if mine have diarrhoea I feed them poached chicken breast for a couple of days. Not too long because they need things that are in cat food, but I've done this for up to five days before with no problems. They also need fresh water available at all times as the chicken is dry, but I keep the water the chicken was poached in and add that to the chicken when I've cut it into small pieces.

Thanks. I wondered about chicken and rice.

I don't think they need the rice, it might fill them up but I'd go with just chicken to start with.

I wouldn’t use rice either in a kitten. Plain boiled chicken breast is better.

Have you checked the paperwork from the breeder or rescue? Most will give you 4 weeks free insurance coverage, sometimes it with the microchip documents, so you may be covered by that.

Has he been wormed?

Went against all common sense and ethics and got from a bad breeder (ashamed to say). So no insurance. Have always got more reputable pets in the past but really wanted a socialised kitten. Serves me right. Albeit he is the most cuddly lovely creature so once we’re through this it will hopefully be ok. At least we had the funds for treatment.

What breed is he?
