Introducing kitten to outdoors.

We got a kitten at the end of October. There was a huge problem with getting his chip transferred to our name so we've kept him inside since. The chip has now transferred to our details a few weeks ago....great stuff.

He's 6 months now and so interested in outside. He sits and watches out of the window, runs to the door whenever it open, runs between legs to try and get out. Its even got to where as soon as I pick my coat up he is at the door before I have it on.

So how do I let him out safely? And make sure he comes back.
Any tips?

Thank you in advance x

I took mine out on a harness until she was 6 months old so she knows the area.

Let him out just before dinner the first time - then he will have an incentive to come back in quickly!

Are there any dangers in the vicinity - busy roads or aggressive cats?

I just let them out in the garden. They first stayed very close by, then ventured out around the whole garden and after a few days they went beyond the fence. They would always show up within 20secs when i called them for food, so they didnt go far at all.
I think most cats just figure it out themselves and explore bit by bit.

I always let mine out an hour before feeding time, to make sure they are hungry and wont stay out too long.

Make sure he is neutered and hungry when he goes out. Go in the garden with him. Personally I would wait until utterly gets a bit warmer say March time ish so he can enjoy it more.

I kept a very close eye on mine for quite a while, l stayed out in the garden with them for short bursts, played with their toys etc, mine are 6 months now, come and go by themselves and use the cat flap fine, plus l also have two other cats who kind of shown them the ropes.

I held mine and showed them around the garden first for quite a few times. When I did eventually put them down, it was close to the door and we went back in and out a bit so they could get their bearings and understand where the access to inside was.

Thanks.
He is neutered. We would ideally keep him in until it starts warming up but I am wary that he is trying to get out and if he does he may think "woo freedom" and not want to come back because he's tasted forbidden fruit.

Before breakfast on a chilly morning. Dont forget to panic when he goes over the fence.

I hate letting cats out for the first time. The first time I ever did it I deemed my massive black cat (rescued from the streets) had been gone too long and ended up scrabbling through gardens in a panic. He sauntered back in an hour later for dinner 😂

I would harness train if you can, and go out with him for a few times. It gets him used to it and calms your nerves a bit. If he hops a fence put something stinky and delicious inside the door with the door open.
