Cat constantly meowing for food

Lindtcat · 12/01/2023 17:29

My 4 year old female cat has started constantly meowing for food and im a bit worried as to why?
She's been neutered and I've taken her to the vet for it and they can't find a cause. All tests fine, been wormed just incase. It's driving me mad.

I give her two sachets, three times a day and she's still meowing. I feed her, she finishes and starts meowing. She will do it until she's fed again. She will sit by my legs and everytime I go to the kitchen, she follows me in there for food.

This started about a month ago.
Only changes recently is, we another cat in September. He's been spayed. So not that. They get on really well, he's fine. He eats and seems satisfied. They have different feeding and water bowls.

Anyone have any idea as to what could be going on?

I would go to the vets and get advice. My cats have been on weight loss dry food for years. It's a battle but necessary.

My cat is quite overweight. She has one sachet if wet food a day and a small scoop of dry food. She’s still starving all day . I don’t know what to do.

That's not enough food, the recommended amount is 3-5 pouches a day. Maybe try giving her 2 pouches and keep biscuits down all day, if you're overly concerned about her weight?

Toddlerteaplease · 14/01/2023 02:19

Is she after treats? My pair have never, ever asked for food. But the meowing for treats/ cat soup every time I go into the kitchen is getting slightly annoying! Especially as they now work together and hang up on me. I'm being coerced by two 4kg cats!!

Shauna27 · 14/01/2023 02:23

Your cat might have diabetes. I'd make sure your vet tests for this.

silentpool · 14/01/2023 03:32

Can you try giving her actual human grade meat? The stuff in the sachets can have some seriously random ingredients and some brands are better than others. 4-6 sachets a day is going to be expensive as well.

Has she been wormed recently?

My cat gets a small amount of chicken or some other meat or fish twice a day and unlimited access to dry food. I get reminded about meal times by him but not because he is starving.

Monty27 · 14/01/2023 05:01

I've been advised to keep water separate from food. She drinks loads. Wet food is given once at night. Dry food is available for grazing at all times , separately from water and wet food too. 3 different places but it does seem to keep her happy.

lljkk · 14/01/2023 05:57

£11/week on each cat food is huge. Don't think I spend more than £6/week, and all of mine are overweight. That's for Bozita which is hardly cheap stuff, Zooplus.

TheClitterati · 14/01/2023 08:30

Commercial cat food isn't great. Lots of filler and sugars etc - stuff cats aren't meant to eat.

I switched my 2 to a 100% meat diet. I have 2 siblings and although they look identical in many ways one was much smaller & his fur was dull not glossy like his brother. He was eating less & less and very skinny. I wormed etc but no change.

I did a trial of katkin & the change has been remarkable- he has put on weight, his fur is glossy, loads of energy & they don't leave any food now. The change was quick & we are on our 4th month now.

But the craziest thing is their poops now are tiny & hardly smell. Because they aren't eating food with indigestible fillers anymore, eating 100% meat, as cats are meant to do, means they digest it all and there is very little body waste.

On the supermarket food they did big stinky poo at least twice a day. Now the litter box is mostly urine with a few pebbles.

They are very keen at mealtimes but they don't cry for food. The food really satisfies them.

Downsides - is it's frozen & I have a small freezer. So a months food takes up about a third of my freezer. But I'm happy to give that over to the cats. It also is more expensive than long life cat food. But I can't see us going back - the difference in their health& behaviour on this food really is incredible. Plus it's great not having half eaten bowls of smelly cat food around.

Here's a trial code if you want to give it a go - 50% off your first box.

The big boy has come to nudge me out of bed to feed him. He's a funny cat as he sounds like a bird. Always chirping, never meows.

My supermarket sells chopped ox heart which cats love.

Thanks so much for this it looks around the same cost as the royal canin satiety my boy is on now while trying to lose weight.

I am going to get him some to try and see if he begs less as it's really incessant all day any time anyone moves 😫

AnnaMagnani · 14/01/2023 09:01

Change your pouches to grain-free cat food. TBH given the number of pouches you get through, you could change to a premium brand like Canagan or Katkin and not spend anymore. Zooplus has a lot of brands like Bozita, Feringa, Animonda.

Cat will then be properly full and only moan at you at dinner time.

On grain-free we can feed ours a pouch and a half a day, minimal dry food and minimal whinging.

TheClitterati · 14/01/2023 09:08

@Techno56 good luck & I hope your boy improves & loses weight.
I saw a change in my 2 very quickly after they started the new diet. I also picked up a trial code from a friend via a fb cat group & im super thankful for it.

lljkk · 14/01/2023 09:09

Someone came into my butcher asking for meat for their dog. Butcher made them correct their words. Apparently it's human grade meat, has to be, and has to be described as such (?) Maybe I misunderstood. Big bag for cheaper, I suppose.

Does zooplus stock all of those brands? I have always fed my cat on grain free food . Usually what ever is on offer. Science plan at the moment. She’s still fat .

AnnaMagnani · 14/01/2023 11:12

Ha! One of my cats would gladly get fat on diet food, she doesn't have an off switch.

However she is more manageable on cat food without filler and we can keep her weight down.

There are loads of European brands on Zooplus at lots of different price points.

MonsoonMadness · 14/01/2023 11:20

My cat was brought up on raw meat by the owner who bred her. She hated cat food as a kitten.

Lindtcat · 14/01/2023 11:58

Yes she'll eat treats, but she is very picky tbh. I don't give them to her that regular, as she will keep meowing for more. Yes she was wormed last month at the Vets just incase but there was no sign of worms tbh. I've spoken to the vet this morning, and she doesn't want to do further testing. I asked about diabetes and thyroid and she said these were included in the blood test. All her levels are normal. Oh and they did do a stool sample also. I don't know if I should be getting a second opinion or not. I'm going to look into changing her food.

OP posts:
TheClitterati · 14/01/2023 15:42

Absolutely worth trying her on a food without fillers and cereals. Look for a very high meat content. I don't think it does our cats digestive systems any good to bulk their food out with things they aren't meant to eat. Apparently some commercial cat food has sugar in it - why would they do that? Sugar makes humans more hungry so it could be having the same affect on your cat.

6 sachets a day is alot. When my 2 were on supermarket stuff they would eat 2 pouches of Sheba a day and often leave a lot of it. Plus some kibble. Now they have approx 200 grams of katkin a day (each) spread over 2 meals, there's no leftovers, and they don't have kibble either.

WildFlowerBees · 14/01/2023 15:48

Try a better quality of cat food one that isn't 4% derivatives like most of the supermarket offerings.

We've tried
Applaws
Meowing heads
Untamed
James wellbeloved
Lilys kitchen

Biscuits
Lily's kitchen
Meowing heads
Grain free James wellbeloved

If she won't eat it I sprinkle a small amount of dried chicken on the edge of a bit of the food and she then eats everything. She rarely follows us into the kitchen now.

Lindtcat · 14/01/2023 21:45

I've ordered a Katkin starter box for both of the cats. Cost £48, was supposed to be £60 so got a deal. Still quite pricey so I'm hoping it works out. Ordered for both cats, I have no doubt my other cat will like it. But not sure about the girl. Fingers crossed. Will be here on the 19th so until then we're sticking with the Felix and Purina. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Glittertwins · 14/01/2023 22:06

We got the next size up of the katkin pouches as sometimes she eats more, other days less. I then adjust the next delivery date to a few days later according to how many pouches are left in the freezer. It is more expensive than her old stuff but she's a lot healthier for it.
