Cat peeing in house

I'm hoping someone here might be able to suggest what we can do.

A few weeks ago, our male cat (3 YO) was accidentally shut into a room for a few hours before we discovered him. He had peed and pooed in the corner of the room, which we understood since he was trapped. 🙁

Since then he has gone back to the same spot in the house twice again and chosen to pee and poo there, despite having access to outdoors and not being trapped in the room.

It's like he's decided that particular spot is now fair game as a litter tray if he can't be bothered to go outside.

Previously we've had zero instances of this - he was using a litter tray from a kitten and transitioned to going outside over a year ago.

Can anyone advise on how we could get him to stop? It's my home office and every time I leave the room I'm worried he'll pop in and go for a pee!

He's gorgeous! I'd clean the area with a fairy liquid solution (no bleach) and then use a cat urine odour eliminator to kill the smell that's drawing him back. I'd then put a temporary litter tray in that exact spot for him to use and then slowly move it to a more suitable place. You can then place something else on top of the spot he's been using to block it off or place his food/ water bowl there as he won't pee where he eats so he'll associate the space with that instead? If there's any stress in the house I'd consider that too.

@Lavender14 thank you so much for replying. I hadn't heard about cat spray neutraliser so I've bought some now. He did the same thing again last night so we are thinking about reintroducing the litter tray!

I'd bring the tray back in, he's telling you he goes inside now and there's no arguing with a cat.

Use a neutralising spray and get him a litter tray for that area so he has somewhere to go indoors.

He's telling you he likes an indoor toilet.
