Hi everyone

Today we brought home a our new cat. We have adopted her from a family who couldn't care for her any longer ( through local cat care charity) She is 8 years old and beautiful - black with orange specks. Pic attached from her old home haven't got a new pic yet.

We saw her in her own home and she was quiet but allowed our daughter 7 to stroke her and our home visit by the charity went well.

We collected her not long after (about 4pm today)and have set her up a little base in our dining room - cat carrier, bed (from prev home), food and water and litter tray. We opened the door to the cat carrier and left it open and have pretty much left her alone (We ate tea in the room but kept noise down) and our daughter sat by the carrier and read her a story.

The poor little thing is curled up at the back of the carrier and hasn't ventured out. How long before we can expect to see her come out? Anything we can do to help her?

I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve played hide and seek with my cats, and none of it intentionally. They have an amazing ability to disappear, and won’t come when called, unless they want to.

I then go into blind panic mode and start tearing the house apart, and questioning myself if the doors really were shut etc.

And then, at a time of their choosing, they just simply appear, back from the other dimension where they obviously travel to. If there really is no possibility that she could have got out, then she must still be inside somewhere. She may be trapped in a wardrobe or something, but the chances are she’s just hiding. Keep checking, but try not to worry too much. Chances are she’ll turn up in a bit.

Oh thank you.

I'm feeling terrible. I should have closed the door so she was in the one room last night. As she was getting so much braver I thought she would like a bit more space to explore. She would have been able to go in hall ( no windows and main doors shut) and then kitchen - window and door to side porch closed.

Previous 2 mornings as soon as my daughter opens her bedroom door she has shot into her room and under the bed.

I really hope she appears. I already love her so much.

Hi Tiny - has Tatty reappeared yet?

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2023 15:48

She'll be there somewhere. No doubt hiding in plain sight!

TinyRebelStayPuft · 12/01/2023 17:10

She has reappeared. She must have squeezed down the side of the washing machine which is the smallest gap. She was under the kitchen cupboards. I opened a kind of dummy corner cupboard and out She popped.

She is now on top of a wardrobe. Feeling like she maybe doesn't like us at all to have to go to such lengths to hide.

She had been enjoying fuss with me so thought she was doing OK.

Don't worry, she's just finding all the different places she can hide so she can make you panic! More seriously, she's likely checking all the hiding spaces around the house so she can get to safety wherever she is.

Common places for mine include:

Under a big chest (they don't fit there any more)
Under my bed
In the back of the wardrobe
Behind the sofa
IN the sofa (gets through the covers on the back)
Under the duvet
Under the lowest shelf on the cat tree
Under the coffee table in the corner
Behind curtains

And Girlcat has somewhere I've not yet found!

In her mind she probably isn't hiding, just exploring. Likely she doesn't realise you can't see her.

TinyRebelStayPuft · 12/01/2023 18:16

One very cheeky 🐈 cat.

That's not the face of someone hiding. That's the face of someone plotting trouble!!

TinyRebelStayPuft · 12/01/2023 18:28

Yup!

TinyRebelStayPuft · 12/01/2023 20:20

@Kenwoodmixitup Thank-you I'm biased of course but I think she is rather gorgeous and she has stolen my heart ready. ❤️

I do think she is going to be somewhat of a tinker when she settles in properly.

We did tell you about naughty torties.... 🤣

Blowyourowntrumpet · 12/01/2023 20:56

She's beautiful. I love a tortie

TheShellBeach · 12/01/2023 20:59

She is splendid.

TinyRebelStayPuft · 13/01/2023 21:50

A bit of progress today. That is Tatty at the end of the bed.

She has just spent 5 minutes or so purring away whilst rubbing herself around my legs and all over the furniture in our bedroom. She seems to like her cheeks and ears stroked and the base of her tail.

Exactly that , just take one day at her time. She’ll go at her own pace.

She definitely looks very settled there, mind! Beautiful girl. X

Glasgowgal200 · 11/07/2023 00:37

You have a tortieshell cat which are usually friendly but vocal. I I foster cats and the first 2 I had settled really easily but the current one I got in March this year took at least 2 months for her to come out from behind the bed and come get pets etc. I used a cat pheromone plug in which I think helped. You just need to be patient- talk to her quietly when you are in the room with her, try not force her to come to you. Try her with some nice treats or maybe she will like catnip?

Glasgowgal200 · 11/07/2023 00:39

Here's a few pics (hopefully) of my current foster cat: Patty
