Harry, what a rollercoaster

On the Thursday between Christmas and New Year we noticed Harry's breathing was erratic. We took him to the vets who put him in an oxygen cage and told us they suspected he had a blood clot as his legs were stiff but there was no way of knowing for certain as it could also be arthritis. After a long discussion we took him home with some gabapentin for the pain and he seemed fine.

The following day I noticed he was really out of it and confused, pacing and circling, so we took him back to the vet and we decided after yet another long discussion he'd gone through enough and the kindest thing would be to put him to sleep. The vet was about to get him ready and she ran through our options again, which included upping his heart meds as much as possible. At the last minute DH said 'we'll do it, let's see how he goes'.

I'd already asked if the gabapentin could have caused the confusion but the vet said it was unlikely but I think it was as, touching wood (and anything else for luck!) he's not been confused since. His back legs are also back to normal so I'm wondering if he jarred himself jumping down from a chair.

He's an old boy and I'm not stupid, I know he won't be here for that much longer so I'm trying to enjoy being with him and not stress too much - it's not easy!

Heres the man himself in his new bed!

Harry!

That must have been awful for you :(

I am glad that he is back enjoying himself :)

Glad he’s doing well now OP

Harry looks wonderful (and I just love it when cats sleep like that - super cute!)

Allergictoironing · 07/01/2023 12:47

Aw bless the handsome boy!

At least he's improved for now.

LostCats · 07/01/2023 20:19

My old boy is on gabapentin and when he first went on it he was extremely out of it and bumping into things.
He has since got used to it, but it absolutely could be what made Harry confused.

So glad he’s happy in his nice new bed!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/01/2023 21:07

That's interesting @LostCats. Harry was circling in his bed and pressing his head into the side of it, it was horrible. We saw his heart vet on Tuesday for a check up and he agreed it could have been that but luckily his legs seem fine now. I'm glad your boy got used to it.

We bought him the new bed as I couldn't bear to see the last one as he was so distressed in it. We may have misjudged the size slightly though...

I'm currently stressing that he hasn't eaten his dinner and therefore isn't getting his medication. I need to calm down!

Hes beautiful 😍

Keeping my fingers crossed that everything continues to be fine and he carries on enjoying his new bed. Although I have no idea how you've been blessed with a cat that actually uses stuff bought for him.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/01/2023 09:55

I know, we're very lucky with him. He uses his bed and his scratching post, although no so much the latter now he's older. I think if we have another cat in the future we might be in for a shock!

Ooh! I have an excellent tip for meds. My boy has to take steroids and gabapentin twice a day.
we got a pill crusher from the pharmacy and grind the pills up and mix in lick-e-lix. Licked clean every time!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/01/2023 21:38

Harry wasn’t keen on lick-e-lix but thanks for the reminder, I’ll give them another try. He often leaves a bit of his pouch so in my current stressed state I’m convinced he’s leaving the bit with his medicine, despite the fact it’s mixed in!

How is Harry doing?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/01/2023 11:18

He ate everything yesterday so and woke me up for more food in the night so he seems to be OK at the moment. His legs are a bit stiff at times, but other times he's marching around like normal so I think it could be when he's been asleep for a while - I suppose sleeping with your legs behind your ears probably would make them stiff!

Ahh I’m glad he’s doing ok. And yup - I imagine that would make you a bit stiff in the morning if you slept like that 😁😁

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/01/2023 11:35

Great to hear :).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/01/2023 12:01

I'm in the office today and DH has told me Harry has now eaten most of his breakfast - I get pictures of empty cat bowls!

Ahh. I totally know the feeling of worry!
Our old boy still has his Christmas tree up with the lights on as he likes to sleep under it 😁

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/01/2023 16:18

I think that's really sweet @LostCats. Harry had a piece of Christmas wrapping paper on the floor for months one year and he'd lay on it. I think DH was eventually mean enough to take it away!

The things we do for them eh! 🐈‍⬛❤️
