Cat with sore eyes.

Linney is ten and he has sore-looking eyes with a little discharge.
It isn't too bad. Has anyone got any advice before I book him in to the vet's?

Don‘t use any eye drops for humans!

It is best to have him checked by a vet.

TheShellBeach · 04/01/2023 21:10

I wouldn't use human ones!

Cool boiled water if you have nothing else in the house.

You can get eye wipes for animals - I have some I use on our oldest cat as he gets a gunky eye occasionally - clears it up a treat!

Mine had this and it was the start of a brief illness - vet said viral - antibiotics (for secondary infections) were needed. The eye discharge was followed by vomiting, and a raised temperature. He was ill for about 5 days.

I always use human eye drops for my Persian. The dry eye drops work a treat. And when I realised the Chloramphenicol drops supplied by the vet were the human ones we use at work. I buy them OTC.

My boy had a sore eye recently and it turned out to be conjunctivitis. It’s responding well to some cream which the vet gave us.

TheShellBeach · 04/01/2023 23:46

I don't think he's ill per se - just always seems to have eyes with stuff in the corners.

It's my impression of white cats that they're prone to it.

I've cleaned it with a swab moistened with cooled, boiled water and I've also ordered some cleaning wipes for his eyes from a vet pharmacy.

I will certainly take him to the vet's if there is no improvement or if he seems ill. Many thanks for everyone's help.

Our cat has a condition where every so often what looks like a scratch appears on the lens of his eye. It will weep a lot, occasionally go cloudy, then repair itself, sloughing off the damaged cells. The vet recommended corneal surgery. Firstly it cost over a thousand, secondly the success rate didn't look very promising, thirdly he'd just had extensive surgery removing all of his teeth and wasn't his normal self. And fourth he's 8 with a heart murmur. So weighing it all up, we decided against it. It's only flared up a couple of times since and quickly recovered, so I'm very glad we didn't go ahead.

In your cat's case, it could be an injury though. The vet should be able to tell you.

My white cat always gets gunky eyes, he makes me rub them away with my nails!

TheShellBeach · 05/01/2023 00:08

Here's the culprit.

He looks just like my other cat! Half rag doll, half maine coon. He does get crusty bits in the corners, but only a little. It's our Himalayan that has the condition. It is only in one eye though, not both. Maybe a virus. I would get it checked if it's a lot, just so you know.

TheShellBeach · 05/01/2023 01:11

@Ladybyrd Ooh, have you got a picture of your cat?

That's him. Chasing a stick. As you do.

Aw. He's gorgeous.

Have you tried tea bags, possibly old wives tale but we use them on our cats. Obviously not straight out of boiling water

TheShellBeach · 05/01/2023 14:49

I did actually think of tea bags. I don't think they're an old wives tale. My dad used to use them on our eyes when we were children, when we had conjunctivitis. I remember feeling refreshed afterwards, and the itching seemed to go.

brew some chamomile tea and chill in the fridge, then wipe over eyes with cotton pad/drop into eye if possible (wait for it to warm a little if dropping in!).

Also a great soother for human eye complaints!

Thanks you. I'll try the ordinary ones first, I think, because we haven't got any chamomile ones.

I got a chamomile eye wash from my friends cats groomer. That's worked well.

Mabelface · 05/01/2023 18:51

Chamomile or normal tea. The latter was recommended to me by a vet friend.
