Question About Cat Flaps

Has anyone managed to get a cat flap for a PVC door?

Our front door (it's a council house) has a PVC door. In our old house (in London) which was privately rented, there was a cat flap already there. This was a million times easier, obviously.

We moved to this house six years ago and have two cats. We have to open the window to let them out, or open the front door for the same reason.

Then we have to open it again when there is a plaintive miaow from outside.

It would be so much easier to have a cat flap but none of the people we've asked seem to be able to fit one.

Does anyone know of a cat flap which would be suitable? Or can we put a new door in? (Probably not as it's a council house).

Thanks.

If it's a solid panel you should be able to cut a hole.

If it's glass or you don't have the tools or you're not confident to do it you can ask a local glazier.

Yes, it's possible - but you'd need to find someone to fit it for you. Though if it's not your own house, would you be allowed to?
You can also have them fitted to glass panels in doors, or in windows if that's easier.
DSis has her cat flap put through an outside wall - it's a bit of a tunnel from inside to outside, but the cats took to it quickly enough.

In my HA house I’m not allowed to instal a cat flap. It may be worth checking if you’re allowed first

Thank you. That's what I think is the case here. I'll ask them once the bank holidays are over.

You can sometimes get a new panel, depending on the design. We're fortunate that our door has panels inset in a frame and the panels were quite cheap to replace from a door/window manufacturer. (About £30, but some years ago)

However if your door is in one piece, you'd potentially have to replace the door if you moved (but if you're planning to stay there long term, it might not be an issue). You can also fit a catflap in a window, and it might be cheaper to replace a window panel if you moved and needed to return it to the way it was.

KnickerlessParsons · 03/01/2023 21:20

That's what we did ^.
The glazier ordered a new glass panel and fitted the cat flap into it. Then he replaced the original panel with the one with the cat flap.
We kept the original glass panel, so if we ever move house, we can swap them over again and take the cat flap with us (it's activated by a chip in DCat's neck).

We used this company to fit to our existing uPVC door. It was a few years ago and it was all very quick and easy.

They cover most of England and North Wales.

Silvercatowner · 04/01/2023 12:21

Goodness... I just used a jigsaw to cut a hole in my uPVC door. I didn't realise it was complicated...

My local double glazing firm do catflaps in PVC and glass, they did one for me.
I'm sure they will for you too, a lot of them do.

TheShellBeach · 04/01/2023 13:54

Thank you to everyone who responded.
We're going to ask if we're allowed to put a flap in the window.
If we are, we'll find a double glazing person to do it.

I have what used to be a cat-flap in a PVC door. It was no problem for the fitter. However the cat used to fight through it with an unwanted intruder, so I now have a cat-hole, as the flap fell off.

DD's cat managed to tear their cat flap off in a temper.
