What temp to leave the heating on?

We are off for a winter holiday. What temp should I leave the heating on for the cat? He is an old boy and is at the end of recovery from an operation.

How long are you off for? Can you put it on a timer, and have lots of blankets/ igloos around?

Fluffycloudland77 · 31/12/2022 08:42

I think I’d go for 20c.

One week. He will probably want to sleep in duvet nest on our beds. We have a cat sitter coming twice a day and PIL will hang out with him on the evenings.

I would leave the thermostat set to 18 degrees constant

AnotherEmma · 31/12/2022 08:47

20? For a cat?! Has no one heard of the COL crisis?!

I'd leave it on 16 with several warm and cosy places to snuggle up. Maybe 18 at an absolute push. But not the whole house (we have smart thermostats).

I leave it at 14 when I'm out and at night. The cat has blankets and lots of places where she can snuggle up.

Gandalfsdaughter · 31/12/2022 08:53

We’ve just been away for 4 days and left it at 15.5 degrees for the cat.

Redebs · 31/12/2022 08:57

14°C in one room with his bed and litter tray

I’m glad you said this. We have young children too and our thermostat is only at 18c during the day.

As he's an old boy and recently had an operation, I'd go for 18c at least in the rooms he frequents.

My boy is terminal and skinny now so feeling the cold and I'm putting an electric blanket on the bed with a timer for when I go back to work next week. If the weather stays the same I'll just do a couple of sessions on low for an hour or so, and if it gets colder then I'll up the time it's on for. I've worked out that it will be a fair bit cheaper than the central heating on all day while I'm out.

Bemyclementine · 31/12/2022 09:05

I'd have it come on for a couple of hours in the evening. I wouldn't leave it on all day.

PatChauncey · 31/12/2022 09:09

I think an electric blanket on for him is a good idea - I have an electric heat pad for my 15 year old cat and it makes him very happy.

AWaferThinMint · 31/12/2022 09:10

I leave it on holiday setting of 12. But my daughters room (his fave) is higher on her hive and she has left her dressing gown for him to snuggle in.
