Am I feeding him enough?

I know cats are notorious for asking for food 24/7, but my 10 month old boy cat is ALWAYS crying for food.

He gets 20g dry food for breakfast, 20g dry food for lunch and a sachet for dinner. He also gets dreamies treats throughout the day.

Does this sound enough to you? The food packs give guideline amounts but not for a mix of dry and wet food. I think it's important for him to have both (wet for the hydration, dry for the dental benefits).

It depends on his weight though.

My tiny, active cat has two pouches and a spoon of biscuits each day. She doesn’t cry for food. She also has a couple of treats when she comes in for the night. Maybe your cat would prefer more wet?

I once saw a tv vet say that dreamies are the equivalent of a jam doughnut and a human wouldn’t eat several of those in a day i.e they should be limited because they aren’t good for them.

We have a not very active but not fat cat who eats two pouches a day and a couple of bowls of biscuits. She also gets left overs such as chicken, sausages, fishfingers (big fan of leftovers is dcat) so I would feed yours a bit more until he’s fully grown and then adjust it.

Your cat probably needs more wet food and less dry stuff. Also, try to give him some meat - chicken or turkey (cooked), no bones of course, and minced beef (raw). Cat food usually has very little meat in it. Cats need meat (dogs don't need it)

Had cats for 42 years

I dont weigh out dry food and just top the bowls up when they're empty. Then they get a ½ pouch each 2 or 3 times a day

Treats are dried meat treats, webbox sticks and dreamies

We've always done wet and dry. So I worked ot half the amount of wet per day and half the amount of dry. When they were tiny I alternated each meal. Then when we went to 2 feeds a day I put out both. We have 2 cats that share the food and they almost never leave completely empty bowls. If they did I would give more dry food. (Ours tend to graze little and often). Try giving a bit more dry food. Obviously if your cat gets fat then reduce.

Does your cat have enough places to play? Do you play with him? Is he crying because he's bored or actually hungry? Don't leave him hungry.

Is the dry food High meat content to fill cat up.
We leave dry food down to graze on.

Yes same. Just top up the dry and let them graze. I buy the high meat content stuff from zooplus. One sachet each of wet in the morning. Happy normal weight cats!

Remember that kittens need more calories than adult cats, and yours will still be growing.

I fed my 2 adult indoor cats (less active, need fewer calories) 1.5 pouches a day between them, and left dry out 24/7 - like a pp, they are grazers and prefer little & often. I reckon I used to top up the dry by 80-120g per day as a minimum. Many/most cats do self-regulate their food intake, so I would feed more unless he's looking fat.

Girlcat is only a bit overweight at the moment because Boycat needs to have renal food which is very high fat, so she's eating the same amount as she used to but much more fattening.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/12/2022 19:57

I free fed until a year old. They don’t all overeat.

Neverknowinglysensible · 30/12/2022 20:13

He’s still growing. Think of him as being the equivalent of a teenage boy, so I’d feed him considerably more than he’s on currently.
Make sure it’s good quality kitten food (Animonda carny from zooplus is reasonably priced) and feed about 150-200g a day spaced out over meals, as well as dry food. Like a PP said, cats seldom overeat unless they’re bored.

My cat is almost two and slim. He eats 5/6 pouches of wet food a day and is still ALWAYS hassling us for food/trying to 'break into' the tin where we keep is so have to shut it away.
I feel like he is eating too much but he is still slim and is treated for worms

Clarich007 · 31/12/2022 12:12

Good quality high meat content cat food is the way to go.
