Adopting cat who broke front legs?

We are looking to adopt a cat after our old cat died earlier this year. One has come up locally who ticks all the boxes, but she needs adopting because she broke both front legs jumping out of a window, and previous owners couldn't afford vets fees. Both legs are now healed (one has some pins in), and she is apparently looking unaffected. Are there any pitfalls we should be aware of? She is young (2 I think), and is going to be an outdoor cat. Had a look at insurance and can't go with pet plan as they won't cover her legs, but some other insurers will.

Apart from the pre existing issue with insurance, I can't see that it would be an issue. We had a cat who had plates in her pelvis as a kitten. She lived to 18.

Our cat is 9 and has pins in her back leg that she broke when she was a kitten. She can jump, climb trees and do all the usual cat stuff. Doesn’t seem to have affected her. Don’t know about insurance because she is not insured. I suspect it will start causing a few issues as she gets older though.

Many thanks, both. Food for thought....

We got our kitten at 4 months old and she had a metal pin in her back leg which was broken in a car accident.

She's now nearly 13 and has always been a strong tree climber!!

We were told she would be prone to arthritis in the leg with the pin - she's only just starting to show signs of it now. Our insurance has never covered that leg, but she's had a long and happy life and I imagine will keep going for a few more years yet.

i think I’d insist on paying for a consultation with a vet (at my own expense) before committing

This may sound like a strange one but beware that if the cat limps you may get abuse from well-meaning strangers. I used to get heaps of abuse people knocking on my door or shouting at me in my place of work because of my lame cat. I was called an animal abuser and constantly asked when I was going to take him to a vet. I would explain he was like that when I adopted him they'd then abuse me for not getting the leg amputated! The vet said it's better to have a leg to limp on than to have to learn how to walk again on only 3 legs. I also had the RSPCA called on my several times. Luckily, my RSPCA adoption papers listed his lame leg.

No good deed goes unpunished!

We've found an insurance policy offered by Manypets which will cover her legs, but we just rang our local vet and they don't recommend them as they have had a lot of rejected claims recently! Anyone got any insurance recommendations? The pp who doesn't insure their cat - do you self insure? Or will just not pay beyond a certain point if the cat needs treatment for something?

@MinistryMelody no pet insurance policy with cover her legs if there are issues with the pins or if she has a limp relating to the previous surgery, I work in insurance and all policies exclude pre existing conditions and related symptoms.

I'd go with pet plan on the understanding that you'll be covered for anything medical like kidneys/cancer etc but accidents relating to her legs would have to be self funded

I would expect her to get arthritis younger than average tbh but treatment has really improved. YuMove supplements and Solensia injections.

I had forgotten that my friends kitten had to have her leg pinned. She's absolutely fine.

Many pets do cover pre existing conditions, our rescue cat was had his jaw wired before we got him and when I asked they do cover if he's not needed treatment for over two years.
