Where do you find kittens for sale?

Hey, just wondered if anyone could help Smile

My lovely nan would like two kittens as a pair. She has a lot of love to give them, and randomly keeps getting mice 🐁 so wants another cat as her old one passed away some years ago and was brilliant with this sort of thing

Where do you find them? I've looked on PreLoved website and nothing for miles and miles?! And most charging over £500 for a kitten?

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am based in Beds but near Hertfordshire or even Cambridge if needs be

Rescue shelter perhaps? RSPCA?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 27/12/2022 20:43

Try Cats Protection. They have loads of cats and kittens that need rehoming. Why would you pay for them?

It's rare to find someone who wants two together so they would LOVE your Nan.

Please please don't buy kittens off the internet as it encourages indiscriminate breeding. Go to a rescue centre. RSPCA, Blue Cross, Cats Protection League, Battersea Cats and dogs home etc.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 27/12/2022 20:44

Please go to a rescue. Please don't buy kittens from the internet. There are so many unscrupulous people who breed cats for money. If you go to a rescue, they'll be heath checked, neutered etc.

She333 · 27/12/2022 20:45

Find local rescues, there are often smaller independent ones. However if she goes for kittens she won't know whether they will have the hunting instinct, she might be better looking a little older (still in pairs) as their personality will be known and they can recommend the best fit.

Wolfiefan · 27/12/2022 20:46

You wait until kitten season. Then rescue.
Why kittens though? They can be bloody hard work. They’re a maybe 20 year commitment and you won’t know what sort of adult you will end up with.

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/12/2022 20:46

My DSIL has just had a pair from a rescue and is very happy with them. Does your DGM want kittens or would she prefer an older cat? Kittens can be s bit full on.

StarDolphins · 27/12/2022 20:49

Please do t buy kittens off the internet/FB etc, I know 3 recent kittens that have died shortly after being rehomed due to illness.

my local 2 rescues always get pregnant cats/kittens in or v young cats 8months etc so best to always go to a rescue as they’re vet checked etc

Blowyourowntrumpet · 27/12/2022 20:49

Have you looked on the Cat Chat website for your local rescue? It might be worth looking. I've adopted from Cats Protection and the RSPCA

Hmm so she's had 2 cats before (not in pairs) and had them from kittens. She says they were fine and hasn't mentioned them being particularly hard work?

I've had two kittens before and found them much easier than a puppy, that's for sure Grin

She just wants a cat who will like some company... she's asking for 2 as she'd prefer them not to be lonely (in a feline companion way, she is rarely ever out the house much so it isn't because she won't be there herself)

It's not kitten season right now. Wait til May and the rescues will be bursting. But yes, private sale I would expect to pay at least £100 per kitten, minimum.
Agree with PP's about older cats being more suitable for an older person.

PritiPatelsMaker · 27/12/2022 20:51

Yeah from what I've read about puppies, kittens are definitely easier Wink

Beamur · 27/12/2022 20:54

Two kittens are great, good company for each other. They can be messier than older kittens/young cats though with feeding/toileting.
I would look into local rescues. Expect to pay £100 or thereabouts adoption fees.

gamerchick · 27/12/2022 20:58

Get a bonded pair couple of adults from a rescue.

caringcarer · 27/12/2022 20:58

Cat breeding season starts in March.

EachandEveryone · 28/12/2022 11:48

I would go for a bonded young pair. So much easier and still so playful. How old is your nan btw? Are we talking 60’s or 80’s as that will factor as well.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/12/2022 11:51

For god’s sake don’t use sites like preloved, you’ll be perpetuating a horrible trade.

google local charities, Cats’ Protection, RSPCA, PDSA, etc.

NoSquirrels · 28/12/2022 11:52

Cats Protection from April onwards, if you want kittens.

Onthegrid · 28/12/2022 11:56

Woodgreen is near woodgreen.org.uk/pets/?species=cat

Onthegrid · 28/12/2022 11:57

Meant to say they may not have kittens online but often have kittens or young cats available

TinselOnRoses · 28/12/2022 11:57

I agree go to a rescue - I have just rescued a bonded pair of older kittens - they do require a lot of patience (and are into everything!)

PlumpkinPete · 29/12/2022 08:54

Cats protection in your area had kittens coming out of their ears a few weeks ago- work checking their Facebook pages as they're updated more often than the website
