Kitten weight / belly

Wanted to get views on my Siberian kitten who is shortly going to be 6 months old as don't want to be setting him up to be overweight as an adult.

-him and his brother are both free fed orijen dry, then usually 1-3 pouches of wet food between them a day. (So max of 1.5 pouches of wet food each a day, plus they do go through the orijen pretty fast)
-they had a combination wormer at 4 months and recently have been on Panacur as we wondered about giardia - pot belly kitten in particular has soft stool although not full on diarrhoea. His brother's poo is pretty normal.

  • they are both healthy and playful. Pot belly kitten is marginally lazier than his brother (who is likely going to be a large cat) but they are both very lively so I'm not concerned about FIP etc. Vet was very happy with their condition at 4 months.

Will get a stool sample done on pot belly kitten once they are a month out from last dose of panacur, but wondered what people thought about his body condition - is he possibly just a bit plump? Obviously with two kittens it is difficult to modulate how much they each eat.

Here's a back view where he doesn't look quite so plump...

Pic of brother for comparison who definitely doesn't appear overweight/pot bellied.

You can get microchip feeding bowls for cats, which makes it easier to monitor who's eating what. I have the Surefeed ones and they work very well.

That's a good shout, didn't know there were options that work with microchips rather than collars. I suspect as they get older they will prefer to have their "own" food too. I do wonder if the soft stool is just caused by gobbling which might not happen if they each had their own 🤔(although the dry food is never allowed to run out so they shouldn't feel like they're competing for food).

Your kittens are gorgeous 😍. My 18month old boys are BIG too. 6.11kg and 5.72kg. Vet happy with their weight but doesn't want them to put anymore on, mine are like yours, slow at maturing so I think they look grand!

You could try a wee dose of prokolin for soft poos for like 3-5days. It's a probiotic and gives them good gut bacteria.

Our Bengal went from gangly to stocky and back a few times before landing on muscular when he was full grown.
