Cat missing the litter tray when she poos

Our cat has decided she will be an indoor cat since we moved house - which is fine and preferable. There are 2 litter trays in the garage (we have another cat who toilets in our garden most of the time) and a cat flap in the garage door.

50% of the poos miss the litter tray. She's obviously trying but missing. I'm using the packing paper the removal people used to protect the floor, but will run out fairly soon. It's a bit grim - I'm fine keeping the litter tray clean but would rather not have to manage floor poo.

Is there anything I can do? She has Feliway in the garage. I'm not sure she's a very bright cat if I'm honest...

Maybe swap it for a covered litter tray so she has to get in it & can’t stick her back end out anywhere?

BadShepherd · 18/12/2022 18:37

I’ve got a covered one - impossible for her to miss.

A34 · 18/12/2022 18:40

Thanks - yes, I did wonder about a covered one. I think she'd freak out though.

ive got a covered one but I didn’t put the door on it and it worked; I thought ours would react badly but they seem fine with it and it’s very deep so even if I’d used it without the cover I think it would have helped this problem

How big is the tray? I buy the largest, highest sided trays I can get my hands on.

Mine wouldn't use a covered one, but I need high sides that boy cat can stand on while he does his business... he likes to be upright for reasons known only to himself.

You might also need to experiment with different litter types in case their toes don't like your current choice.

I have this, it's pretty big

Thanks - this looks good. Can you use liners with it?

Thanks - I think our cat sticks her bottom outside the tray. I think she thinks she's being good...

I look after two cats who have a massive, plastic storage box for a litter tray. They hop in, do their business and hop out. The edges give them privacy but are too far above the litter to be used as a perch!

Would that be an option?

Pixiedust1234 · 18/12/2022 22:31

If the litter trays are the same size/shape/height as the ones she used to have no problems with then its time for a vet check. Missing the litter tray is usually a sure sign of pain.

CatNutsRoastingByAnOpenFire · 18/12/2022 22:44

I posted this on another thread earlier, same problem with cat pooing over the edge or next to the tray:

*Maybe they don't like the type of litter you have. Perfumed litter? Coarse litter? Some prefer it to be soft and fine, perfumed stuff puts them off.
I have 2 large trays, deep ones to keep the litter from being kicked out, and have discovered that current cat prefers the soft litter, will choose the tray with it in rather than the Cats Best which somehow seems to have become harder and crunchier over the years. I don't use anything scented around cats, no perfumed cleaners, litter, sprays as it upsets their sense of smell.
Had one little cat that would use the tray a couple of times and when she decided it needed cleaning she would use the floor in front of it. I put another tray in the room
Currently have these trays, although previously used the covered type with a higher back, removed the lid depending on which cat was using them.

Have you thought about a top entry litter box? This one is extremely roomy.

Put the litter tray somewhere in the house where the cat spends a lot of time: www.jacksongalaxy.com/blog/youre-settingup-your-litter-box-all-wrong/

Please ask the vet for a blood test, it could be neurological issues. Just to rule them out. I have had two tabbies with neurological issues and both times I took them to the vet later than I should have as I failed to notice that the peeing outside the little box/poking on the very edge, was an emergency signal. I will regret it till my dying day.
hopefully it can be easily solved early on with some vitamin B or other medication. Or is nothing at all.

Girlcat does that - front feet on the edge so standing upright to do her poo. I suppose it means the bum is that bit further away from the poo, plus easier if they are doing a "long" one!😮

upfucked · 22/12/2022 20:47

My cat did this. We didn’t understand what was happening until I saw him poo. He was dutifully standing in the litter tray but he is long so his bum was over the edge so the poo went on the floor. An extra large litter tray solved this.

I agree with getting a covered tray but before shelling out on one , to see if it would work get a large cardboard box ( or tape a couple together ) with the litter tray inside if your Dcat likes it and stops missing get a covered one but leave the door off for the first week or so until your Dcat is happy using it
