Cat shouty meowing

My boy cat is shouty meowing loads. That really loud hollow meow. He uses it when he's hungry to remind me it's mealtime, and he has smaller "cuddle me" meows too.

He's started doing the really loud shouty meow at random times through the day (and middle of the night 😭)

We've been to the vet and he's not found anything to cause concern, nothing causing pain etc and the view of my vet is he's just getting old and probably getting some dementia. He is using his litter and eating and drinking ok.

I'm just sad for him if that's the case. He's been with us since my H and I first lived in together almost 15 years ago. I'm not ready for him to start seeming old though. He's still my wee baby who came to us at a year old and wreaked havoc, then became an adept serial killer.

Is there anything I can do over and above loving him rotten and keeping everything as much the same for him as I can?

Bless. I suspect keeping things familiar and lots of reassuring fuss will be appreciated.

AWaferThinMint · 14/12/2022 13:26

Thanks @Beamur. Poor old man that he is did manage to steal a mouth of tuna from
My plate when I wasn't attending closely enough earlier. Wasn't even cross.

My elderly boy does this too, often at night. If you've had him checked by the vet and he isn't unwell, there isn't much more too can do other than give him lots of cuddles and hope for the best!

This exactly what my cat does ! He shouts when he comes in through the catflap and he shouts when he goes out. He shouts for food and he shouts at the dripping tap in the bathroom for a drink so the acoustics in there make it ten times worse and he wakes us all up at night.
For context he is 17 and I think he has dementia.

Our boy is old (17) and started to do this about a year ago. We discovered he had hypothyroid. But even on meds he still does it. We think he is a bit deaf and blind, so shouts for us until we come and cuddle him, so he's knows we are there. He's much more cuddly these days.

My cat's aren't elderly yet, but they both yell for me/each other if they don't immediately see us when they come in the room - for example if I'm sitting at my desk quietly, boycat will wander the house yelling until I call so he can find me. Girl cat didn't use to, but has learned to do the same from her brother.

I wonder if it's just that, that site/hearing/memory aren't what they used to be and so he's just looking for you with his voice.

Good point about senses deteriorating as he ages. He can hear (still picks up the noise of a can opener) and if I shout his name when he's shouting he often comes to see me. God bless all our aging felines 🥰

Cheddar does this. She usually wants something. The late Maid used to do it in the middle of the night, I'd rush downstairs to find her sitting quite happily on the rug. I dear she did it to wind me up.

Bestcatmum · 15/12/2022 01:41

My 20 year old started doing this so I left some small cosy boxes on their sides round the house with fleece blankets in. It made her feel much more secure and she stopped shouting.

My cat has started this yowling, there has unfortunately been a change in routine over the last three months. DH WFH for two years, he is now mainly back at work and is only at home one or two days a week max and she hates it. She used to sit in a bed on his desk. She is about 12 now. I think it’s separation anxiety. She favours DH and DS, she is a little cool with me in comparison and hated DS GF when she started dating DS she used to pee on her clothes! She now tolerates her. She just prefers men.

Pepperama · 15/12/2022 01:59

Yep, our almost 20-year old started doing this quite a few years ago. Nothing wrong with him apart from not hearing much at all, and getting a bit forgetful. He’s an older gentlemen who just likes his cuddles, food and moving from warm spot to warm spot. So just to reassure it doesn’t necessarily mean a steady decline in health!

AWaferThinMint · 15/12/2022 06:22

Thanks all. I like hearing the stories of our old friends. He loves our hot spots like some of yours. We know where heating pipes run as they are where he snoozes in winter.

My boy dies this, he’s 15. It’s like he designed himself a new siren for the latter years of his life. My neighbour politely enquired if it was us who had got the new cat that cries like a newborn baby.
He does it especially when he’s just eaten, or when he’s in the house in the dark and it’s a very distinct howl. He does still have his regular meow which he uses most of the time, but sometimes he likes to give us the big guns.

Sparklingbrook · 15/12/2022 07:05

Sparklingcat does it-it sounds awful and soo loud. She has Hyperthyroidism (medicated) and I’ve a feeling she’s going deaf.
Immediately after eating or using the tray, and on her way upstairs to us at 3am.
Normal voice reserved for when food is not provided quickly enough or door opening required!

Theunamedcat · 15/12/2022 07:07

My four year old cat does this he is just attention seeking as his brothers seem yo get most the attention! He is currently yelling at me because he is hungry its minus 7 I'm flipping COLD
