Cat peeing over the edge of the litter tray

I bought a splendid new litter tray- larger, with sort of sloping upper edges- as my cats are getting on a bit and don't like to go outside in winter weather.

One of them wees neatly inside the tray. The other one balances precariously on the edge of the tray and wees over the edge, onto the surrounding floor (or actually, the large piece of cardboard that's underneath.)

Obviously this is not what I was hoping for. But what can I do? I'm assuming he doesn't like the feel of litter on his paws. Can I build a bridge or a shelf or something? Or should I accept it and put an old towel underneath?

Or something else? Any ideas?

Admittedly, this isn’t the most useful advice as you’ve already bought a litter tray, but we have a litter tray with a lid (so it’s like a little cave). Stops our cat spraying over the floor!

I used a high sided, corner litter tray for rabbits.
Just placed it in my cats favoured corner of the main litter tray and it did the job.

dementedpixie · 05/12/2022 21:59

Maybe try a different litter
What are you using just now?

Defiantlynot41 · 05/12/2022 22:09

I feel your pain. We have a high sided litter tray but one of ours (girl) likes to pee like an unneutered boy cat and doesn't care which way her dear end is facing when she does it. Have resorted to puppy pads under the "open" side which at least is easy to clear up and contains the smells quite well.

Defiantlynot41 · 05/12/2022 22:10

Rear end, definitely not "dear"!

Aa per 1st post my cat has a cave because he use to stand on the edge of the tray and tip the sodding thing over !
But while I was trying to figure out a cure ( Inc putting half a house brick in the tray ) I put the try in a high sided snug fitting card board box with a U shape cut in the front .
Would that work for your cat ?

Shodan · 05/12/2022 22:21

@ScottBakula I tried the cardboard box thing- it was marginally better, so I went ahead and bought this new corner litter tray with the high sides and the bit cut out at the front...he just balances like a goat on the edge still🙄
@dementedpixie He's done this with the cheaper stuff, and now with what I think is called Delight? (it was from Sainsbury's) Maybe the wood stuff might be better?

The puppy pads might work though. Worth a try I reckon.

They're both 16 so I want to pamper them a little

Snap! Pair of 16 year olds here too (one of whom know she should sit to pee Smile)

One of mine does this - it's always a sign she is having bladder issues as she doesn't do it when she is fine.

I'd suggest a trip to the vet as your cat may be in pain from crystals in her wee.

ScottBakula · 05/12/2022 22:44

Ha ha infuriating little buggers aren't they ! Can you get a whole box ? Something like a crisp box or a cheap storage box from somewhere like B&M , Quality save and cut a hole in the short end ?
If you try this go careful because the boxes tend to shatter easily and leave sharp edges so you need to coat it with lots of tape or a soft bit of foam or something similar

I agree this could be worth checking out , my cat has had lots of bladder problems and while a link was never made between him standing on the edge of the tray and bladder problems there could be something in this. ( he still does it now and he's cured for now at least of his bladder problems)

It might be worth trying a top-entry tray. I really like them because they are much less messy and can't have this problem.

Ok lots to think about, thank you all.

I'll definitely book in an appointment at the vet for a check up, although looking at the list of symptoms he's not displaying any of the others mentioned. But worth checking into.

I'm sure I can find a cardboard box so I'll try that too.

I'm intrigued by the top entry litter box- I'll put that on my list of things to try if the other things don't work out.

My cat used to do this, so I got a really large storage box, and put the lid on the floor and the the tray on top, so when he peed over the edge, it was only going on the lid rather than the floor, so I could just wipe it up from the lid. I did try to make the whole box in to the tray, but he didn’t like that and wouldn’t go in to it
