Morning,
just looking for some advice. We’ve adopted our little furball and he has FIV so is an indoor cat. He’s four years old. We’ve got four weeks free insurance with Petplan which will probably continue with this but wondering if anyone can advise with health plans. Are these a good idea with long standing health condition or can I buy worm flea treatment over the counter? Thanks in advance

Morning - congrats on being adopted by a gorgeous panther!

My pair are indoor, and I looked into the whole "vet health plan" when they came home e.g. If there are no other animals in the house, he shouldn't need regular flea and worm treatment which is a large part of the savings if you have a health plan. In the end I decided against it, as the cost would be much more than the cost of their annual MoT and jabs plus a couple of "just in case" spot-ons (e.g. for the time I had mice in the conservatory)

The insurance usually won't cover you for FIV related costs as it's an existing condition, though I think some insurers are looking at doing a "pre-existing conditions" cover (likely to be V expensive though). But equally a health plan doesn't usually cover treatments other than routine preventative stuff e.g. checkups, vaccines, flea & worm treatment, plus a discount on other stuff.

There are a few vets on here, so I'm sure at least one will be on later to advise further (and better!), but a good rule is that as long as you fully trust your vet then be guided by them.

Check the health plan. I have an outdoor cat but as well as the flea and worm treatments I get some free vet checks and blood tests each year. Useful because she developed hyperthyroidism. (Not sure if FIV needs blood tests) They also clip her claws.
I would also flea and worm an indoor cat but that’s because I hate the idea of both and would want to be 100% sure.

Oh and it also includes her annual booster injections.

Look around for insurance quotes. I found Tesco much cheaper than pet plan. And they've been brilliant. I have a pet plan for my two. It does work out cheaper. But I'm a bit lax on the flea treatment as they are indoor cats. So it gets saved up and sent to rescues.

Ps. He's gorgeous!

WRT insurance get a lifetime plan. I didn’t and it only covers conditions for one year after diagnosis. I haven’t been able to make a thyroid claim for years, but my premiums are £££££s because of those claims.
Shes in three tablets a day for it.

Thank you all. I will ask vets for some advice. He’s very loving and loves nothing more (apart from his food) than a cuddle. Love him to bits
