I think my cat has worms.

New kitten had him for about 4 weeks.
He's been fine until this week, we found out he had fleas on the weekend then Monday he started getting mucousy diarrhea, literally just dropping out of his bottom everywhere he sits.

It's been a nightmare I've been cleaning the kitchen all day.. First we thought it was his food so we cut wet food out, it really stinks today and its so so bad.

I looked on the floor while cleaning his poop and noticed 2 small white almost noodle pieces like the size of your fingernail in his poop but haven't seen anything around his bottom.
It must be worms right? I've flead the poor sod but this is another level 🙀
It looks like he's lost a little bit of weight...going to grab some worming tablets this evening any tips with giving them to him?

What age is the kitten?
Have they been vet checked?
When mine were kittens we got panacur liquid wormer from the vet. We also got flea treatment from them too

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 25/11/2022 15:05

The kitten is 17 weeks old.
Not yet we were thinking of giving him the tablets first then seeing if he improves over the next couple of days but will see what they say.
I know they do tablets in pets at home so we're thinking of giving them to him?
He still looks a healthy weight I'm just concerned as he's been eating but obviously we cut out wet food so maybe he's lost a bit because of that.
There is also a female we are going to worm too, she's been a bit gassy but otherwise ok in herself.

Go to the vets, get a proper wormer. Worm regularly going forward with prescription meds and ditto flea treatment,

plantsareglorious · 25/11/2022 15:07

Hi, he needs a vet- worming treatments from the shops are useless!

dementedpixie · 25/11/2022 15:08

They might sell the panacur liquid too
What brand of food are you using?
Ideally you want one with a high meat content and minimal grains

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 25/11/2022 15:12

@dementedpixie

Hes on Royal canin dry kitten and was on their wet food until the runs started.

Was hoping we could just purchase the wormer over the counter as obviously vets is a pain in the bum and charge higher rates when they will probably just give a wormer anyway.
It looks like they do the panacur paste so may get that.

I used advantage for the Flea treatment as we have had experience of it and it works quite well.

Kittens can die very quickly. I'd take him to a vet with those symptoms.

Piffle11 · 25/11/2022 15:17

You really need to take him to the vet. He obviously has worms, but there could be another problem as well… You could be giving him the wormer and he may still need other treatment as well. Yes that's going to be more expensive, but we all know that going into pet ownership.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 25/11/2022 15:18

Ah so I've called the vet and they say they can't see him until tomorrow.
Should i get the tablets anyway or wait and see what the vet thinks?
Think they are drontal.
He seems his usual self but just pooing a lot. 😔

Stickytreacle · 25/11/2022 15:25

Wait until you see the vet, he may need a different wormer as they don't all cover all types of worms, although drontal does but the vet will be able to check if anything else is going on and it gives you the opportunity to get him chipped and booked in for neutering at the same time.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 25/11/2022 15:26

He is already chipped and neutered so that's a relief.
Just want my kitten to be better.

That's good then, he'll soon be sorted by the vet, or you could try speaking to the vet on the phone and see what they advise?

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 25/11/2022 15:41

@Stickytreacle

They seemed to think it wasn't an emergency as it's been going on for a week and he is otherwise alert and playful but did say to keep an eye on him.

They said they would like to see him ASAP though tomorrow due to his age so booked for the morning.

I think he's going to have to stay shut in the kitchen unfortunately tonight due to the mess he is making.

Yeah, and I know are hard floor would be best! I wouldn't give him any more it medication, unless he really needs it, that way they can give him whatever he needs straight away.

Stickytreacle · 25/11/2022 16:26

It's just one night, I'm sure he'll soon be right as rain 🙂

Choconuttolata · 25/11/2022 16:38

Sounds like tapeworm, you need to pay for the proper worming and flea treatment stuff from the vets. My vet does a monthly payment plan that I get my cats flea and worm treatment with, they also get a check up and vaccinations annually as part of it too, plus discounts off dental, appointments and neutering.
